The following is a response to Janet's Employment Question from my
library's head of personnel
Norma

In response to the message below, I would hesitate to comment
on that specific set of circumstances without knowing more
details, but I think that the student in question, or any
student or career employee, for that matter, is always on the
right track when s/he makes it a point to know their rights as
an employee and keeps their eyes open to the issue of whether
the employer is, in fact, respecting their rights and operating
accordingly. In instances when that doesn't seem to be the
case, then, by all means, an employee should assert him/herself
to learn the specifics facts of the matter and do everything
they can to help set things aright.

DUNCAN,
I'D SAY MY HEAD OF PERSONNEL (AS WITH PROBABLY 90% + OF THOSE
IN THAT POSITION) IS THE ONE THAT'S A LITTLE PARANOID.
KNOWING HER I'D EXPECT ALL THAT COULD BE DONE IN
ACCOMODATION TO BE DONE, BUT I WAS A LITTLE DISAPOINTED
THAT I DIDN'T GET A MORE DIRECT ANSWER. LUCKILY ACTIONS
SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS AND HER ACTIONS ARE OK.

Although the sembelance of support is there from your head of personnel;
all he/she is saying is "The burden of proof and correction lies with
the injured party. The employer sure isn't going to help". I
wouldn't like to have a case to file involving this person (as an
epmloyer)......

Duncan,

As always, thanks for your responses. If the student feels she has
gotten an inadequate response to her situation, I will certainly urge
her to contact the "BonaVenture" - school newspaper. Unfortunately,
they tend to be a little lame on those kind of issues, but we can
always try to change that! Believe me, neither I nor this student
will let things go long without resolve. We have an excellent
advocacy group in town - Directions In Independent Living - who has
already been advised of the situation, and would willingly step in
with a good deal more force than I could. I'll keep you posted in
this ongoing saga.
