Hi Cathy...

You asked about the study that showed how when teachers use
SEE or PSE that a lot of what is said on the lips is
blatantly missing on the hands..

It is available at Gally U. from the Gally Research Institute

The study is called, "Unlocking the Curriculum." It was
printed in 1989 or 1990.

Call them and ask them to mail you a copy.

Tom,

I didn't know that Adam has interpreters that use SEE. unless u are
confusing SEE and PSE.

Also, Adam was hearing up til he was 7 or 8 then he was hard of hearing.
He became profoundly deaf at 15. So of course he was already talking!

I gradually lost my hearing over time too. It is not definite abt
my hearing loss as a kid. But, I was already talking when I entered
kindergarten. I already had communication.

I never said I advocated one side or another. I think it is important
for a kid to have communication as early as possible. If a kid is 3 or 4
and hasn't had any communication yet, when they do learn, it is different
than learning before the age of 3. They do not have that background that
is important to have before developing further in the languege.

The SEE debate....u guys there are 2 different SEE systems. SEE 1 and SEE 2.

I met people at Gallaudet U who were products of the SEE 1 and SEE 2
useages in the classroom. They had a lot of problems with English.

I was an English tutor at Gally. I knew their backgrounds.

By the way, I do not think that it is appropriate to use Adam and I
to compare other students who were raised with SEE becuz we didn't
have interpreters in our classrooms. I am not sure if Adam did in his
upper classmen years at High School. But we were not educated in
a classroom where the teacher was signing.

To Jen Barber:
I am kind of interested in your major and the requirements. I assume you
are in an undergraduate program in sp. path and audiology? Could you detail
some of the requirements for "the audiology half" of the program? Our majors
don't have the sign systems/language background you are required to have.
