Hello everyone-

I am looking for someone in the DC area to help me learn sign language. I
took a class some time ago and have not had the time or opportunity since
for another class. I believe it is a beautiful language and have always
been enchanted by it. I would like to find someone in the DC area
(hearing or non-hearing) who signs to spend time with/develop a friendship
with and, consequently, continue my education in sign. Or if you have any
advice on other avenues to try, please let me know. Thanks.

Hilary

Montgomery College offers excellent choices at different levels.
You might try them at the Rockville Campus.

Hope this helps.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Silent Suppers in the DC Metro area.
Since I don't have the contact info, maybe the fact that I've brought it up
will jog someone's memory so they can post the info. (-:

I encourage people who are learning sign language to go to Signed
Suppers hosted in some cities nationwide or classes offered by
community colleges.
A Silent Suppers is no way to learn sign language and it is
embarrassing. While eating with some deaf friends at TGIF in Pentagon
City Mall a few years ago, we noticed a group that used gesture and no
voices. We knew the deaf host over there, someone who continually
failed to become a sign language teacher. They learned nothing that
way. They should have learned fingerspelling and increasing their way
up. I did some inquiry and found out that Silent Suppers are mostly
hosted by deaf oral and Signed Suppers hosted by signing Deaf.

Silent Suppers??? Do you mean a sign language teacher
who takes hearing students to restaurants where she
teaches sign language? If so, I have seen the same teacher
in my area pm occasions. I think Silent Suppers is a good idea!

I had never heard of a differnce between Silent Suppers and Signing Suppers! Here (in Richmond, VA) we call them Silent Dinners :) We have all levels here, from the beginner to the certified interpreter. And we have D/deaf of all differnt levels of signing capabilities.

I dont have the schedule for the Silent Dinners (Suppers?) in the Mannassass area, or for the general Northern VA area, but if you contact VDDHH (Va Dept. for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing), they can get a schedule out to you :) And if you want to make the treck out here to Richmond let me know!!! Be glad to have ya :)
