We are a county LIbrary at the New jesey shore. We are open on sundays from mid-Sept. to mid-May. Times have always been 1 to 5 on Sunday but there is talk of changing that to all day.

Are large majority of public library in the Northern Suburbs of Chicago are open on Sundays. The average hours are 1:00-5:00, using the School year calendar. Which means September through May the libraries open on Sundays. Several larger libraries closer to Chicago are open year round on Sundays and a few have different hours, 12:00-6:00 etc.,

We are open Sundays, September (After Labor Day) until June - 1pm to 5pm with the exception of a few holidays such as Mother's Day, Father's Day, etc.

I have been following this thread closely since there is talk among the higher ups of beginning Sunday hours. We are a mid-sized public library and, like many other public libraries, we are under staffed and can barely cover our circulation and reference desks for the 65 hours per week we are already open - September through May.
My question for all you public library CIRCPLUSSERS open Sunday hours is: How do you staff these hours? Is it voluntary, meaning that only staff who are interested in working Sunday are scheduled? Or is it staffed on a strict rotation with ALL staff working several Sundays a year? And finally, how are you compensated for these hours - I would hope that no permanent library staff would be required to work Sunday hours for straight time (pay or comp.time) but knowing library pay-scales as I do...who knows? ;-)
TIA Lisa

At our county facility on the main library downtown and our largest branch observe Sunday hours (1-5 October thru April). Part-time staff are paid what they work, of course. Full-time staff receive a full day off the week prior to the Sunday they are scheduled to work. All staff (full and part time) are scheduled to work Sundays. This averages to about 6 per scheduling period.

We're open Sunday afternoons from 1 to 5 p.m. from after Labor Day until the Sunday before Memorial Day. All staff is part of the Sunday rotation and that may mean one or two Sundays a month. Part-time staff is paid time and a half; full-time staff is given comp-time during the week at time and a half. When I work a Sunday I usually work five hours (from 12:15 to 5:15) and take a full day (7.5 hours) off during the next week.

We are the main branch of a medium sized regional library system in Washington State. We are open 68 hours per week. We have been open 1-9 Sunday, year round (including Easter Sunday), since 1988. Staff who work Sunday are scheduled to work 12-9. We do not have rotating schedules. Most public service staff work either Sun-Thu or Tue-Sat. I have worked Sun-Thu since 1988. Salaried staff (librarians) do not get any extra pay for Sunday work. Clerical staff get a 10% pay differential per our union contract. When staff leave, the schedule is offered to current staff at that level before we hire. That way, those dissatisfied with their schedule can move to one preferable to them. This works well for us.
We have about 1000 hours per week of staff time in the circ dept and we circulate 1.2 million items per year.

Hi, I work in the State Library of Michigan not, so I do not work Sundays as I am not in a public service area. However, my last job was in public services in a small public library. We were open on Sundays from September until May 1:00-5:00. Each staff member had to work their rotation for their regular pay--no incentive for working Sundays. We were always *very* busy. Most of the staff was part time so they got 4 hours straight time, but the full-time people got paid 8 hours for 4 hours work. Just? I think not! I don't miss it!!
Take care, Jane

I've worked in three public libraries that have Sunday hours. This is how each of them scheduled, paid and staffed. The first, ALL staff regardles of department were required to work on a Sunday rotation. Naturally the public service staffs were scheduled for their desks, but staff like Technical Services, and Bookmobile, were trained to handled checkin at a back circulation station and were expected to work on rotation.
The second and third only the public service staff is schedule to work a Sunday rotation. It usually amounts to one Sunday a month during the school year.
In all three cases, the Library paid time and 1/2 for Sunday work. The library I'm at now, requires as Board Policy time and 1/2 for any work on Sunday .
Because of the 40 hour standard work week and the mandatory time and 1/2 for overtime based on FSLA our boards deemed it easier and "fairer" to pay time and 1/2 for any Sundays.

Sunday staffing is treated as their regular week day for full-time staff that is that those who work on Sunday are off on Friday. I have full-time staff work both Saturday and Sunday, so when they are schedule to work the weekend, they are off on Thursday and Friday. Full-time staff are not paid overtime for Sundays
For part-time staff Sunday is treated as extra hours. Part-time staff are scheduled to work every third Sunday.

We are medium sized public library and are open on Sundays fro 12-4 Sept. through May. Permanent staff work Sundays on rotation and we fill in with hourly staff. We have a skeleton crew. Everyone who works spends the whole time on whatever desk they are assigned. Permanent staff receives either time 1/2 pay or time off, their choice. Professional staff receives straight time. EVERYONE from the Director down works on a Sunday rotation. During late fall, winter and early spring it is one of our busier days averaging about 2000-2500 checkouts in the 4 hours. Early fall and late spring are pretty dead with perhaps half that number of items going out.
When I worked in various north suburban Chicago libraries, all of our staff worked Sundays on a rotational schedule. No one was exempt from it except those who did not work public desks (technical services for example). Pay varied; at one library, we were paid time and a half for Sundays, but at 2 other libraries we were given comp time off.
