I'm wondering if anyone has seen the Chinese import OUI JU, by the same
director who did RAISE THE RED LANTERN? It recently came to the only
theatre in town courageous enough to show these small market films.
The word of mouth on this one is equally promising.

j-man,
Could you be referring to THE STORY OF QUI JU, by Zhang Yimou?

Yes. Sorry for the typo. The title was printed that way in our local paper
and I quite mindlessly copied it.

You mean DOU JU, don't you?

I think the title and spelling of this film, at least on its video release
in this country, is either "Ju Dou" or "Jou Du." At least, one of those
is on the laserdisc version, which I just received but haven't yet watched
and can't remember the title of. And about the subtitles that Doug Simpson
mentions: I think that on the disc (and probably cassette release), they
are supposed to be done in yellow to be more legible.

Hope to be able to watch this one before the weekend's over.

Dear Stephen Jackson, I saw OUI JU last week and loved every minute of it. Not
only beautifully photographed but also totally sensitive to the
complexities of the Chinese personal relationships. Having been in China last ye
ar, I
was also delighted to see how faithfully the street scenes in a large city
are captured. China is an emerging giant that needs more understanding
than we can get from stereotyped newspaper stories. I'm lucky enough to
live in a small town with some big city amenities, including foreign
movies. Hope you get to see it soon. Ken Rothwell On Tue, 14 Sep 1993,

To clear the air, THE STORY OF QUI JU is the new film by the director
of JU DOU; he also did RAISE THE RED LANTERN.
