Part III: Essay questions. Select three (3), and answer in 1500 to 2000
words each.

1. Critics have debated whether THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT (Frank Tashlin,
1956) represents the apex or the nadir of faux-misogyny in American
cinema. What do you think? Your discussion must include an
explanation of what it is that the girl can't help and why she can't
help it. (Hint: why does Julie London sing about the Crimea River?)

2. Discuss the Talmudic significance of Jewish guys from New York riding
around in cars in BYE BYE BRAVERMAN (Sidney Lumet, 1968) and THE PLOT
AGAINST HARRY (Michael Roemer, 1969/1989).

3. In ATLANTIC CITY (Louis Malle, 1981), Lou (Burt Lancaster) says, "You
should have seen the Atlantic Ocean in the old days." What would you
have seen? (Marine biologists may NOT select this question.)

4. Discuss the function of ritual in the depiction of the Bar Mitzvah in
THE APPRENTICESHIP OF DUDDY KRAVITZ (Ted Kotcheff, 1974), JOSHUA THEN
AND NOW (Ted Kotcehff, 1985), and UNSTRUNG HEROES (Diane Keaton, 1995),
with particular reference to the differences between the Canadian and
American variations.

5. The neo-noir "cult" film, MS. 45 (Abel Ferrara, 1981), contains
elements of the three major European influences on classic American
film noir: German Expressionism, French Poetic Realism, and Italian
Neo-realism. Or does it?
