This church recently had a destructive fire (I think it was ICEL, since
the weekly 11:30 Sunday mass was SRO since they started celebrating the
Tridentine here back in '88...). It is undergoing reconstruction under
the auspices of the archdiocese to return it to its pre-VII splendor.
As an aside, this was Bp. Sheen's parish church, where he was pastor
for many years...

Until the indult masses started, they had used the old altar as a flower
stand and put the priest's chair in front of it. It was an old stone
granite/marble church with this incongruous plywood-veneer VII altar in
front. It never looked right IMHO...They also took down the carved
stations and put up bad photos in frames...

OK, I'll buy that. I, too, have seen some poorly designed/constructed
front altars before. Larger cathedrals that have a choir section behind
the altar don't seem to be so bad, but you're right about older churches
where the altar is built against the back wall.
