This fall I will be teaching an art history course on 18th-century
England and Italy with the grand tour as the conceptual link. It is a
combined upper-level undergraduate and graduate course. The last time I
taught it I ordered the following books to serve as texts. The
assignments from the texts were supplemented with various readings on
reserve. While the texts I ordered worked well enough, I would appreciate
any ideas or suggestions before I send off the book order form.

Ellis Waterhouse, Painting in Britain, 1530-1790
John Summerson, Architecture in Britain, 1530-1830
Francis Haskell, Patrons and Painters
Albert Boime, Art in the Age of Revolution, 1750-1800

Thanks,

No one has mentioned Stephen Jones's The Eighteenth Century volume of the
Cambridge Introduction to Art. Although it is small and is definitely an
overview, it is an overview of what you want, and the first chapter centers
on the Grand Tour. The writing is reasonably lively & the illustrations well
chosen; the color good. It is well liked by students here, where we have
used it for the last two years (generously supplementing with videos, museum
trips et al.). Granted, ours is an undergraduate humanities class!
