25th Annual Conference

EAST CENTRAL AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY STUDIES

13-16 OCTOBER 1994

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY - UNIVERSITY PARK CAMPUS

CONFERENCE THEME: "CROSSING BORDERS"

The boundaries of 18th-century life and culture are reflected in its
literature, art, philosophy, and political life. We encourage
sessions that invite specialists from all fields to unite in exploring
common ways in which these borders were obscured, transgressed, or
crossed. We suggest that there are multiple interpretations of
"crossing borders" and will give emphasis to those sessions that
foster this diversity and encourage participation from more than one
academic discipline in the session. Each individual paper need not be
interdis ciplinary, but the session as a whole should focus on broad,
interdisciplinary issues, such as the crossing of national borders
(both in travel and politics), borders of genre, traditional
chronological boundaries, gender, cultures, discursive modes, metho
dologies, social classes, and race.

To submit a proposal or paper for consideration, send it to the
session chair noted after the title. If no such chair is mentioned,
then please send the abstract or paper to the conference chairs, Dick
Frautschi and Christine Clark-Evans.

All participants must be members of ECASECS, for which Mary Margaret
Stewart, Department of English, Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, PA
17325-1486, can be contacted concerning dues ($10.00 reg., $5.00 grad
student, $15.00 couple). The dues of graduate students attending the
conference are waived, and graduate students are eligible to submit
papers in advance of the conference for the Molin Prize, awarded to
the best paper by a graduate student at the conference. These papers
should be sent to Joan Stemmler, Chair, Molin Prize Committee, in
advance of the meeting, because a member of the selection committee is
needed to arrange to hear the paper (3540 Winfield Lane, N.W. /
Washington, D.C. 20007).
