Blind Pig recording artist Tommy Castro has been named "Blues Artist
of the Year 2006" by the readers of BluesWax, the largest subscribed
blues publication in the world. Castro took the honor with a record
number of first place votes.

BluesWax is a weekly ezine with nearly 100,000 subscribers. Publisher
Chip Eagle said, "I love Tommy Castro and I'm very happy our readers
selected him. There are few artists as deserving as he is. He gives
everything to his fans, never puts on a bad show, and has one of the
best blues bands in the world."

Castro's high-energy shows are so consistent he has certainly earned
recognition when those in the blues field discuss the best touring
acts in the world. A supremely talented guitarist, gifted vocalist
and engaging songwriter, Tommy also possesses remarkable charisma
which has allowed him to wow and win fans on every stage he's
performed on.

The Tommy Castro Band had another tremendous year of touring in 2006
and ended the year on a big upswing. In October the Mayor of San
Francisco declared "Tommy Castro Day" in recognition of the artist's
unselfish efforts in support of various community projects as well as
his musical achievements while serving as The City's unofficial
musical ambassador throughout the country and the world.

Castro and his brilliant band have captured a hold on legions of fans
and critics alike everywhere with their mesmerizing blend of rock,
blues, and Memphis soul. The band began the new year performing on
the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise, followed by headlining the
Legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue Tour.

The start of 2007 also saw the release of Castro's latest CD,
Painkiller, which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Blues Chart. In a
CD review Billboard said, "San Francisco's Tommy Castro is known as a
major blues player. But there's always been a good deal of soul and
rock in his blues, and some of the top tunes on Painkiller show those
influences in the best possible light."

In expressing his gratitude to all the blues fans that voted for him,
Castro said, "I like these kind of awards best because it is folks
that support the music, the average Blues fan, that is giving me the
thumbs up. That makes me feel great! It's great when industry people
recognize me, but when it comes down to it, it's the people who
listen to the music that I have spent my life making that really
matter. Thank you!"

I'll have to disagree. I think there are many, many bands out here in
bluesland just as deserving. I don't see a need to disparage those
performers in order to build his importance up. What makes you, or anyone
else, think that "there are few artists as deserving as he is?" That's about
as pompous of a statement/opinion that I've heard presented as fact in some
time.

"The City's unofficial music ambassador?" Who says so, the guy who wrote
Blind Pig's press release? That's hardly a consensus. Sorry, my vote still
goes to Tony Bennett, and I betcha about 98% of the free world agrees with
me, but then again they aren't trying to sell Tommy Castro records--so what
do they know? As a consumer, here's a tip; Overselling a product with
outrageous claims only makes the reader/listener suspect about everything
else...even those impressive online subscription numbers, which as we all
(should) know sometimes get inflated by people interested in justifying
advertising rates....not that Blueswax would do something like that.

Agreedbut I'll even add that Castro is a fine player...

...but there are a great many other working blues players as good or better
than he is and many who have been playing in obscurity for decades...and who
will continue to do so because they basically aren't "attractive" enough for
the "biz".

Just look at who wins at the Grammys or listen to an often interviewed and
cited "expert" bluesman like John Mayer <hack, hack, hack... sorry something
got caught in my throat>...

Our world of modern music has devoled into a world of hyperbole and
marketing in a sad and significant way...it's pretty much become all money
and glamour...

So it goes...

Tommy IS a fine player, and he's loyal to his fans....often that's a one-way street from fan to performer.

I'm saying that not all the touring artist I see in this area have as long a memory as Tommy Castro. He knows people, venues and organizations by name from one year to the next. He WORKS at being loyal to his supporters. Works harder, in fact, than almost anyone I can name!

Tommy Castro is a super-nice guy and one of the hardest working men in the
blues. I had a chance to play with him back when he was running a jam in San
Jose back in the early 90s and it was great fun, but......he is nowhere near
the "Blues Artist of the Year." I would put at least 50 other artists above
him more deserving of that nomination. Castro has a fun "party band" that
performs various types of music, more soul and r & b than blues, but he is a
very pleasant entertainer with a crowd-winning smile, which might've prompted
the award (either that or he has a lot of friends on the "Blues Wax" staff
that decided he deserved it)

I have listened to Watermelon Slim just recently his lyrics don't flow well
and his vocals are gonna have to grow on me. I am not sure of the appeal yet
but it does sound like honest music.

I do not understand the Joe Bonamassa love fest that my local comrades
have - they talk of blues in schools & Bonamassa I always counter with
Fruteland - not saying JB is not good or anything but bring in a blues
rocker just doesn't appeal to me.

It just dawned on reading your post that this Blues In The School deal might
be the perfect place for a band like the Homemade Jamz bunch to play (along
with the history part presented too). Simply because the kids might look at
them not so much in a 'when I grow up' frame of mind, but with more of a
'that could me/us now' outlook, maybe inspiring them to get on with it--and
in to it-- just that much sooner.

Reba Russell is my pick of this group. Superb vocalist and great performer.
Tight band that really seems to enjoy what they do.

Castro- I like what I hear on record and the limited amount of live
performance I have seen from him was enjoyable. I can see where he would be
a top vote-getter from these choices.

Gomes is OK (that's a compliment, by the way). I like his recordings and he
does a good live show. Nice guy to sit around and talk with.

Ricci is pretty good from what I've heard of his records, but I have not
seen him live. I've got him down as someone to watch for.

Slim? Good at what he does but I guess it hasn't quite grown on me.

Joe Bonamassa? The Thumper rule applies.

Agreed.

No Knock against Reba Russell or Tommy Castro or most of the others (who are
very good at what they do), but notice I specified "of this group."

I would have voted for Bobby Rush if given that choice.

Another name to throw in the pot: Ben Prestage.

Ben had a very good CD to come out in 2006. I had the good fortune to see
him perform a couple of times and I have to say he kept my attention as well
as anyone I have seen in the past five years or so. Based on my dealings
with him at the IBC I'll say he's also a very conscientious and meticulous
artist. "Professional" in all the good senses of the wrod.

I believe he is definitely one to keep an eye on over the next few decades.

I would agree with that assessment. Ben won one of the venues I was working

IMHO, Ben had a good chance of nudging out Sonny Moorman for 2nd
Place in the IBC finals, but two things cost him points:

1. Whatever that "funk" thing was he did about 2/3 of the way through
his set. It was out of context with the other material.

2. Trying to squeeze in an abbreviated version of "Preachin' the
Blues" at the very end. That's a tough tune to do no matter how much
time you've. Trying to do it in less than two minutes was suicidal on
Ben's part.

Aside from that I thought his set was outstanding.

As for Castro, et al: These people were nominated by Blues Wax
readers, yes? Some of them may have been working with, um, "limited
resources." ;)

I'm not sure why Ben even started the song. I clearly saw him acknowledge the timekeeper giving him the two-minute warning. The cool part about Ben Prestage, though, was he was right down in front dancing to Nathan James & Ben Hernandez's set. Win or lose, he was certainly enjoying himself.

Sorry if it came across that way. What I was implying is that every
publication, web site, radio station or whatever has its own
clientele or target audience. You won't get Superchikan nominated by
people who read a hip-hop magazine. The blues world is fragmented.
The Blues Wax nominees came from Blues Wax readers. Simple as that.

I understand bro...i didn't think the list was very "deep" either. Kind of seemed like a blues "entrance level" list...but that's okay, everyone has to start somewhere.
