There was actually something of a real if brief blues conection to MJ as
well. Before Jackson family patriarch Joe Jackson got his kids involved in
music, he was apparently a semi-pro musician on the active Gary, IN blues
scene for a while (I may be remembering this wrong, but I think he was a
guitarist.) When he first started pushing his kids into the music field,
he enlisted the band of a friend of his to rehearse with the kids. That
band: Johnny Littlejohn's. I can't remember where I first heard this, but
it may have been from my late friend Jimmie Lee Robinson, who knew Joe
Jackson way back in the day.

Another loose blues connection: one of Michael's brothers, I think it was
Tito, was leading a blues band on a tour around the country a couple of
years ago. I didn't see them, but I know they played at Bob Corritore's
Rhythm Room in Phoenix.

I don't own any of his music, but I HAVE enjoyed hearing some of it. After seeing him perform so
many times on TV, I will say that I think he was one of the greatest entertainers who ever lived. I
could watch his routines over and over. He had real charisma and stage presence.

I don't own any of his music either, although I have enjoyed his work from
the Jackson 5 days up through the Pop era. I have been surprised by the
scope of news coverage. I just don't see him as that pivotal or important
in the music, or in the culture. Of course, I'm pretty much "out of it"
anyway. Spend most of my time listening to blues...

All this reminds me of when Elvis died. I remember my mother and her
friends crying that day. I think MJ had the same type of effect for a lot
of people. We can't deny his talent or the effect he had on people, even
if he wasn't our cup of tea.

On TV yesterday they compared MJs death to Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean
(and I few more I can't remember)....but am I the only one who gets
flashbacks to John Lennon?

That was the most tragic of them all....he was murdered....the rest just
didn't take proper care of themselves.

Compared to John Lennon, Michael's passing paled in comparison here in Portland. The newscast showing fans gathering to mourn stated "dozens." When Lennon died the numbers who came out to Pioneer Square were in the "hundreds" if not well over 1000 mourners. Again, to stress Pat's comment, though he may not have been our own personal favorite, his life did affect many that were touched by his music and death.

No matter what opinions I have, there is no doubt that there was massive
talent here, and it is a shame to have had it cut so short, no matter who it
is.

The problem with "paying tribute" to Jackson is that he long ago
turned himself into an abhorrent freak. The bizarre plastic surgery,
the turning his skin white, the paying of millions of dollars in
settlements for child sexual abuse... buying the "Elephant Man's"
bones... showing up in court wearing pajamas... etc.... all overshadow
his musical accomplishments. If he had passed away around the time of
the "Bad" album... 1987... we all would have been mourning him as a
pop music icon of remarkable talent. But that didn't happen. He died
as a freak... a freak he created. People forget apparently that he
didn't become known as the so-called "king of pop" until he announced
that that's what he wished to be called. He became a symbol of self
centered arrogance, excess, and decadence, and he died that way.
That's how I will remember him. The Michael Jackson that I was a fan
of disappeared in the late 80s.

Don't forget his persistence in refusing to sell back The Beatles catalogue to Paul, Ringo and Yoko (as if they need the money either). Truth told, that transaction will more than likely pay a good deal of the debt he left behind.

I'll give you the child molestation charges and the only reason I do that it because it was obvious
that MJ thought it was OK to sleep with boys in the same bed even if he was not related to them.
That is borderline.........sick. But he was never convicted of it. The power of money? Probably.

As for the other stuff, from what I understand MJ had a skin condition the paled his skin. Many
Black people have this. I could be wrong if HE had it. The wild spending? Elvis did the same stuff.
He was almost broke when he died. He let his body go and abused it with crash diets, bad food,
lack of exercise and massive quantities of prescription drugs. Elvis' outfits were pretty outlandish
and he liked guns, lots of guns. He showed up at the White House high as a kite while saying
drugs were destroying America along with the hippy movement.

Hendrix, Joplin, and Morrison died from drugs. Sam Cooke took a prostitute to a hotel and was
shot for attacking the female manager. We could go on and on........

I still can't see the connection between Michael Jackson's death and
Blues-L, even in these quotes below.
I thought I was not going to read a line about this here, but I was wrong.
Please add the NBC prefix so that those who wish to read blues related

OK, I'm a contrarian here. I think that in 20 years or less people will
remember Michael Jackson as well as people today remember Al Jolson or,
dare I say, Russ Columbo. In a blues context, maybe the most similar
artist would be Bumblebee Slim, hugely (blues) popular in the '30s and
totally forgotten by the '50s.

I am Michael Jackson fan no doubt - I own more Michael Jackson CDs than
Buddy Guy and certainly more I than I do of Eric Clapton. I watched that
Billie Jean Live performance from the Apollo the day he died - gee whiz that
was a powerful performance. I listened to Off The Wall and Thriller the next
day - The man child was incredible IMHO.

If you want to like to scrutinize every performers private life and
eccentricities then we could go on for days & days -

I would have to say Michael Jackson & Mozart are the two in my collection
that don't really fit in with the rest of the collection - not comparing the
two just saying those are the only two that you don't expect in with the
others.

I think he was a kid at heart and when he says he shared a bed with someone
it's not the same as Paris Hilton saying it.

As far as buying the rights to the Beatles music, sounds like a great idea
to me - Would you not like to own the rights to the Beatles music..?
