I guess this sort of diversion/trivia is made much easier with Google at
your fingertips, but never the less, it is a statement that rings true for
more than one genre of music. (and to give credit where credit is due, folk
music, to a larger degree than most, rose above this level in the 50s and 60s).

Arguably Youtube hits is a measure of interest from overall music fans.
"Mustang Sally" gets 1 680 816 hits whereas my personal favorite tune, a
Muddy Waters classic, "Walking Through The Park" has 37 306 hits. I
would not criticize a blues band that covers Sir Mack Rice between
Howlin Wolf and Little Walter, if they do covers. Originals are, of
course highly appreciated by most audiences. In the end, the paying
public decides what they go for.
