I had a telephone chat with Robert Owens leader of the DC area group, The
Hardway Connection, who won the Blues Foundation's talent competition several
years ago. Owens, who is nephew of the legendary Don Covay mentioned that
their ten song disc is currently being manufactured and they hope to have
copies available in mid-January. Jerome McKall who is simply one of the most
soulful vocalists I've heard will be heard on four tracks solo, and he does
two duets with guitarist Owens. Owens has one vocal, Floyd Haywood, the other
main male singer with the group has two features and the group's female
singer, Toni Love has one. Included on the album will be "Somebody" which is a
cassette single they have been selling for over a year that is an original
inspired by a Don Covay song. Another song on the album which I have not heard
is "All Night Blues." Apparently the Gator has been playing some of this on
his DC based WPFW show, but I haven't heard it.
This group has never disappointed me live and I'm hopeful this album can get a
sense of what they are like live. They have four first-rate vocalists, so it
is like a mini-R&B review.
Incidentally, for DC based zellers, they are no longer at Gee's, but are
playing the Clinton Inn in Clinton, Maryland every Friday night.
