The New York Times reports today that wolfgang's vault purchased
recordings made by Festival Network LLC of the
Newport Jazz and Newport olk Festivals. They are digitally transferring
the tapes and plan to offer them as streaming
audio. The tapes have 1000 to 1200 individual performances, the
earliest were from 1955. The first recordings
from the 1959 Jazz Festival are available at wolfgangsvault.com. They
plan to also offer performances as downloads.

The story may be found here.

Which makes some wonder just how many artists signed off on, or are
getting paid extra for, these upcoming releases.

Or will they be using the 21st century default excuse/reasoning that "the more people that hear you, the greater the chance someone might_BUY_some of your music." And how long must we wait for that same business model be extended to house painters and tile installers...that's what I want to know.

But, back to the point of your post; It does sound like there's going to be some great gems coming out of this mine; I just hope ALL of the right people get paid for their performances.

You had to sign away recording right to be booked there and Vanguard released some good stuff over the years.

However, I am going to take the position that these rights are not transferable on the artists that I had there unless there is compensation which includes publishing . . .

The author of the article obviously has questions about the rights to
reproduce the music even though Wolfgang's exec says that the artists are
being paid "generous" royalties. I, too, hope they have some good material
from the folk festivals. I have made two purchases from Wolfgang's Vault.
One was a recording of Muddy at the Fillmore that was disappointing in its
quality. I also bought a Lightning Hopkins performance at Ash Grove that is
super.

Dick, Good luck. The way it reads, seems like the Ratcliff believes it will
be tied up in court real fast. Is George throwing a bone to existing
record labels ? Or a wrench?
