I was having a discussion with my husband the other day about handedness.  he
is left handed and I am right handed.  I am curious to know how many
catalogers are right-handed and how many are left-handed.  I am also curious
about how you see yourselves.  Do you consider yourself logical, thinking
before reacting, or emotional, reacting before thinking?

Please respond directly to me and I'll summarize if anyoned else is
interested.

Good Morning!

I read your question with some interest.  I am the librarian for a small library
at a technical institute in South Georgia.  I am the only staff and handle all
phases of library management.  That includes cataloging...all though my
activities of course are not limited to that.

Now, for your question...I happen to be truly ambidextrous...neither left or
right hand dominate.  In additon, I find that I am neither left or right brain
dominant.  I teach computer classes part time and create programs as needed.
This process is a very logical process.  I love math, especially geometry.

But I am also a very artsy, creative person...actively involved in drama, I
direct the community theatre.  Our last production, with 120 cast members,
received accolades from around the area.  I also create stained glass windows,
and love to decorate.

I often say that my right and left brains battle each other..., but I'm glad
to say that neither side wins.

I hope this helps and I'd be interested in receiving a summary of your
responses.

Those of you who are interested in librarian personalities might enjoy Mary
Jane Scherdin's new book: Discovering Librarians: Profiles of a Profession.
ACRL, 1994, 0-8389-7753-7.  It came out of a national study of librarians,
which used several reliable personality instruments.  There is some break down
by type of work within libraries.  (I have a chapter on a study done in Texas,
which includes support staff and other types of libraries.)
