YESTERDAY'S PERFORMANCES
------------------------
**LVIV VIRTUOSI PERFORM**
Freiburg, Germany, July 4-10. The Lviv Chamber Ensemble
of New Music represented Lviv musical culture in a series
of concerts in Freiburg. Two concerts took place in the
famous radio studio SudwestFunk. One concert "Tonstuck aus
Lemberg" included works by composers from different historical
periods who lived and composed in Lviv such as Franz Xavier
Mozart, Joseph Koffler, Andrij Nikodemovych, Yurij Laniuk,
Myroslav Skoryk, and Oleksander Kozarenko. Another concert
was performed during the city's 875th anniversary celebration.
**THE SCENT OF "YEVSHAN"**
Mohilov, Belarus, July 14. The Lviv chamber choir "Yevshan" were
laureates (1st place) of an international choir competition of
spiritual music which had over 30 participating ensembles. The
choir's music director and conductor, Bohdan Gengalo, also received
a prize for best conductor during the festival. The International
Music Festival of Spiritual Music also included the Lviv choir
in several solo concert programs. Having travelled and performed
in many countries, including Germany, Canada, and the United States,
"Yevshan" within the past year has began to actively concertize with
several various programs of Ukrainian music. This year, the choir
presented unique Christmas and Easter programs with the popular
male sextet, "Pikardijska Tertsia" [Picardy Third].
**FESTIVAL RESULTS: MOLODA HALYCHYNA '95**
Novoyavorivsk, Ukraine, July 14. Fireworks and other
celebrations ended the three-day festival (July 12-14)
of popular song - Moloda Halychyna '95. More than 50 performers
from all parts of Ukraine including Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk and
Kyiv, took part in the festival's song competition. In the older
age group (16-21 years), 1st place was awarded to Valeria Polishchuk
(Lviv), 2nd - Nazar Savko (Lviv), Oleksander Lakatosh (Uzhhorod), and
3rd place - Roksolana Kuzyk (Drohobych), Olha Senchukova (Kyiv), and
Natalka Burmas (Ternopil'). In the younger age group (9-15 years),
Oksana Shavkun (Dnipropetrovsk) received 1st place, Andrij Shtoiko
(Pustomyty) - 2nd, and 3rd place - Vitalij and Andrij Yaremij
(Novoyavorivsk). -- Source: Moloda Halychyna, July 18, 1995.
**PLICH-O-PLICH IS INVITED**
Vitebs'k, Belarus, July 19. The international festival
"Slavyanskij Bazaar" would not be international without Lviv's
popular ensemble "Plich-o-Plich" [Shoulder to shoulder]. Led
by soloist Olia Yunakova, the ensemble was invited to participate
in the festival's music competition. -- Source: Za Vilnu Ukrayinu,

**FAMOUS UKRAINIAN WRITER DIES**
KYIV. Oles' Honchar, well-known Ukrainian writer and academician
from Poltava Region, who chronicled episodes of the Second World
War in his trilogy: "Prapornos'tsi" [The Flag Carriers] 1944-45,
and wrote other monumental works "Sobor" [Cathedral], "Tavria"
died July 14, 1995. Funeral and burial took place in Baikovskij
cemetery.
**UKRAINIANS AND THE WORLD**
A new publication, Ukrayintsi v Sviti [Ukrainians in the world],
was recently made available in bookstores in the West. The 400
page book, edited by Petro Kardash and Dr. Serhij Kot, contains
over 500 illustrations which were collected from various sources
around the world. The book includes information about ethnic
Ukrainians, from political activity to artistic achievements.

**PUBLICATION FOR UKRAINIAN INTELLECTUALS**
Lviv. Recently, in the Lviv Actor's Building [Budynok Aktora]
there was a presentation made by a newly independent cultural
journal "Yi". Although officially the first issue, six issues
of "Yi" were published illegally from the year 1988. The
magazine's sponsors include the Kyiv Center of the Arts, Soros
Foundation, the Institute of American Pluralism (Chicago), the
Institute of Political and Cultural Research (Kyiv-Lviv), and
the Lviv Center of Europe and Asia. Taras Voznyak, editor of
"Yi", stated that the journal's main purpose is to discuss actual
problems that are current in Ukraine: problems with Europe and
Europeanization, to which Ukraine is heading, and with Russia
and the post-Byzantine world, from which Ukraine is departing,
the influence of Byzantine and Muslim cultures in Ukraine,
Judaism in a Ukrainian context, the problem of Ukrainianization,
and pan-slavism and its perspective in the future.
**LVIV ARTIST RETURNS HOME**
Lviv. In the July 18th issue of "Vysokij Zamok" was news about
the famous Lviv artist, Ivanka Nyzhyk-Vynnyk (1912-93), who lived
the last 47 years of her life in Paris. An emmigrant after the
war, the Ukrainian artist left instructions in her will to transfer
her entire estate to the Ukrainian National Museum in Lviv. Within
her collection are potraits, still lifes, ceramics, and decorative
plates. Of special interest are her weavings, which combine
contemporary European and Ukrainian styles. An exhibition as
well as a re-burial of the artist's remains to Lviv Yanivskij
cemetery are planned in the beginning of September of this year.

PERSPECTIVES: THE UKRAINE'S RECORD INDUSTRY: YOU GET WHAT YOU HEAR
------------------------------------------------------------------
Recently, I was asked to give some information about
new recordings of Ukrainian classical music. This
simple question baffled me completely. The reason
why needs to be explained, since the record production
industry in any well-developed country would seem to
be a normal cultural process.
The truth of the matter is that a national recording
industry does not exist in Ukraine. Probably it does
exist, but I have never seen any signs which would
indicate such. The same can be said about Ukraine's
music market. Of course it exists, but it can hardly
be called a market since the choices it offers can
hardly be called a choice. Some music stores in Lviv
which used to sell recordings (LPs) have denigrated
to the point that you can find anything in these stores,
from toothpaste to athletic sportswear, everything except
music. In such times of economic hardship, everyone does
their utmost to keep afloat.
Times like those of the past, when the notorious "Melodia"
record company reigned over the "unbreakable" 1/6 part
of the Earth's surface, have followed into oblivion.
The record company left an incredibly disproportionate
representation of Ukrainian music in the productions it
issued. But even this situation was better for the
Ukrainian music industry then at the present, because
after the "unbreakable" became broken, Ukraine appeared
to be without a record producing industry, which was once
concentrated in Russia.
One need not be a retail analyst to predict the little
competitiveness of the CD's in the Ukrainian market. If
the price of top-rated CD's could be half as high as an
average monthly wage (buy a CD or survive!) it can hardly
be affordable for ordinary music lovers; they can only be
content with the several-year-old vinyl LP·s. Strangely
enough, there are no cassettes with classical music, which
obviously could have been very successful. What are the
perspectives for a Ukrainian recording industry? Let
somebody else answer this simple question.
-- Paul Buckwheat, UAM.

CORRECTION:
-----------
A factual mistake in the original program of the Sixth International
Festival "Virtuosi" was written in the 2nd issue of U.A.Monitor. The
actual place of Stanislav Skoczinsky's percussion concert was not the
Dominican Cathedral, but the Lviv Philharmonia.
