I was just looking at the Coldwater Creek catalog and they have 16 X 20 inch
prints for sale unframed and I assume unmounted for $24.95 US. Assuming the
photog gets 60% thats $15. After the cost of printing and shipping how does
the photog make any money? Know anyone who took this deal and how they are
doing? What really gets me is that if you put a piece of wood and some
cardboard around it and cover it with glass you can charge $69.95. That's
2.3 time more than the value of the print. Oh! I forgot matting is art. I
bet the actual cost of the wood, matte, and glass is equal or less that the
print cost. And that's why I am thinking of making my own frames from
scratch. What skill or art is there in pushing a piece of oak thru a router
and putting a off white piece of cardboard around the photograph.

Depends on how much value you put on your time. I've tried this and I'd
rather be photographing or printing! I agree that the prices you mentioned
are ridiculous. I don't know how they can sell prints so cheaply.

George,

Fine framing not only enhances the presentation of the image but its
lifespan as well. It is a lot more than you suggest & excellent framers are
worth the cost, just the same as excellent photographers.
