USB devices & VirtualBox OSE

I'm trying to run WinXP in VirtualBox OSE and have not found the secret
to setting up usb devices within the session. Some of the sources I have
googled make it appear that this feature is not available in the free
version. I'm not using it enough to justify much of an expenditure, I
just want to able to download some programs for my Golf GPS device and
occasionally run the program for my Ion USB turntable. I was hoping
set-up everything I needed to run in a virtual machine and not
re-install XP as dual boot. Suggestions?

I know if you down load the free version for the website instead of
loading it from the package management repositories then you will have
the ability to run usb devices with in the virtual boxes.

The open source version of Virtual Box does not have USB device on it.
The proprietary, free-beer version, now owned by Oracle, does have it
enabled. You can add the repositories:

Thanks I'll do that. Of course thanks to MS, I'll have install XP and
then spend 2 hours doing all of the updates. Unless someone has a work
around that adds usb function to the version in repository.

If you already have the virtual disk with XP on it all you will need to
do is copy that some where then uninstall the version you have now and
install the Free as beer version then create a new virtual machine and
direct the virtual harddrive the file you copy from the first install.

if you're using the same virtualization software, but just a different version, you should be able to backup the virtual machine and re-import it into the alternate version. I can't say I've done this with virtual box, but I'd be surprised if this wasn't possible.

The only thing you should have to reinstall in XP is the virtual/guest tools.

Thanks to everyone for their help. I tried to load the Sun version of
VirtualBox using the wiki instruction and had some issues, so I removed
everything connected to VirtualBox OSE and then downloded and installed
the Sun version. I was pleasantly surprised when it found the previously
installed and updated version of WinXP.
I activated the USB in the sttings and it was able to see my USB
turntable and several usb flash drives but could not open any of these.
I'll have to spend some time working through that today and tomorrow. If
I can get it to work I'll be able to reclaim the partition I had set
aside for XP.

In the vitual machine I'd go into device manager and delete everything under Universal Serial Bus controllers, then action->scan for hardware changes and let it re-detect your usb controllers, that might fix it.
