I found it interesting that in order to make the budget, they went without an optical drive, and mentioned how we all have plenty of pen drives floating around. Is this the first sign that optical drives will soon go the way of floppy drives? I for one DO have that drawer full of pen drives I seldom use...and I'm not sure where they all came from.

No, cause unlike floppies, CD's, DVD's and BR discs are still used for
more than storing and moving files. Optical drives are not going away
any time soon, but it is possible to get by without them in certain cases.

Those of us using netbooks have learned to us usb drives instead of
optical drives. But I still need the optical drive on my desktop to rip
Cd's and DVD's to then move to the usb drive and load on the netbook. In
a year of using netbooks I have been tempted several time to purchase an
external optical drive bit have not felt the need enough to part with
the cash.

As I'm writing this note I am loading Chrome OS Flow onto a pen drive to
test drive it. Has anyone tried out Chrome OS? Would anyone be
interested in adding a discussion on cloud based OS's to our agenda next
meeting?
