I was wondering if anybody has tried using Skype on Linux (Ubuntu)?  I am hoping to try it out tonight, and I'm sorda hoping somebody already figured out the video thing.  :)  I've done a bit of searching on Google for it, and I've read some interesting things on it.

I've used Skype + Video on my Windows install (same laptop as Ubuntu is on) with excellent results simply using my Xbox camera.  I'm hoping to get it running in Linux to avoid the need to reboot for such things, especially once I (hopefully soon) start having Skype video conferences with developers for some of my open source projects.

From my experience Skype works great on Ubuntu.

Nate,

That is encouraging.  What kind of webcam do you use?  I've seen stuff regarding video drivers, which I've had an issue with in the past (and still do), since I'm running a built-in ATI video card: what kind of video card/driver are you using?

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 and installed the beta version for 8.10 and
everything seems to work fine.. even with my crappy Logitech camera.
Now seeing the video for the other person is kind of difficult... with
my intel video card it works fine, but with my ati radeon 5800 it
seems to flicker alot... but other then that it seems to work
alright.. I know other people are probably having issues.. but isn't
troubleshooting so much fun!

Well, the fact that you can say video works at all is a good sign.  I'm worried that the lack of adequate drivers for my damnable ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 video card may give me the most grief in the whole process.  Then again, it seems like any sort of advanced video-related stuff is halphazard in Linux unless the system has an nVidia card (or the user has sacrificed enough goats to... nevermind).

It appears that Skype with video in Ubuntu works!  I haven't done any video chatting yet, but the test for my webcam (Xbox cam) works just fine.  If I remember, I'll let you all know once I've made a video call--I have one scheduled for Sunday, so I should know by then.  Thanks to all who helped, and to all who didn't for putting up with seeing them in your inbox!
