Since I updated my AMD64 machine to 10.4 I am unable to boot into WinXP.
The choice appears in the GRUB menu but when selected it just returns to
the menu.

The menu choice when I open it to edit appears as follows:

insmod ntfs
set root='(hd0,2)
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 30fc772bfc76ea8c
drivemap -s (hd0) ${root}
chainloder +1

the symbol { } is not an exact reproduction the symbol is a squiggle
(see attached poorly drawn squiggle the second one would be a mirror
image)but I do not see it on my keyboard

I don't know enough about GRUB to spot the error or correct it - any
suggestions would be warmly received.

Dave

Do you get any errors when you try to boot into Windows?

No the screen goes blank for 10-15 seconds and then returns to the Grub
menu.

Hrm... not really sure what to tell you if there's no error.  Check to see if you can mount the drive in Linux, see if you can read data off the drive... I'm sure there are tools you can use to do a "checkdisk" sort of thing to see if there are filesystem errors, as that could be a problem.

Another thing I would suggest, if there's crucial data you need, is to use dd_rescue (a.k.a. "ddrescue") to make an image of the drive.  If you've got a spare drive that is at least as large as the one that it's installed on, you can write the image to that drive and see if you can boot.  Another option would be to make a VMware machine (through vmware player) and write the image to the disk that way.

I'm not familiar enough with Grub to give you any other pointers on fixing/troubleshooting the problem at hand.  Maybe someone else on the list can help.

Check out super grub disk, pretty easy to repair boot errors:

Thanks Jeff I tried supergrub and it recognized the os on the harddrive
but it still did not launch xp. Since I'm having some other issues with
my 64 bit upgrade, i.e. no sound and no sound card loaded. I am going to
back up my key files and do a fresh install. Kept the Supergrub disk for
future use.
