In order to update the bios on my new netbook I need to use a USB
formatted to FAT16 not FAT32. Disk Utilty no longer offers FAT16 as an
option it formats to FAT32. Even in VirtualBox running WinXp only FAT32
shows up as an option. Any ideas of how I can force foramt to FAT16?

No real crisis here it is running fine under the current bios but there
are 2 newer versions available.

Could you repartition a USB stick small enough to utilize the FAT16 FS.

in other words, create a 256MB partition and format it as FAT16?

I haven't tried this, but here's what I'd suggest:

Using fdisk, create the partition using "4" (FAT16 <32M) or "e" (FAT16 LBA).  Then use mkfs.vfat with "-F 16" (though just running "mkfs.vfat" might do it).

As a side note, you can search linux-specific stuff at [ www.google.com/linux ]; that's what I used to find some hints.
