Here is the Gentoo Power Setup wiki:
http://www.gentoo-wiki.info/Gentoo_Power_Setup
the emwrap.sh script I use for rebuilding and updating is linked in
that page and is available at the following places:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-282474.html
http://code.google.com/p/glibcsnap/downloads/detail?name=emwrap.sh&can=2&q=

I also use ccache for speeding builds (notice it's already in the
Gentoo Power Setup's initial make.conf):
the page: http://code.google.com/p/glibcsnap/downloads/detail?name=emwrap.sh&can=2&q=
has more info, but I usually don't get more into it than the Gentoo
Power Setup reminds me to do.

there is at least one other tool I was going to mention, but I
remembered it when i was beginning that last paragraph, but I can't
think of it now, I'll email it to you if I remember it.

Hope that helps,
James

As Mary and I left the BBQ (at which we both had a great time), I placed one of our dishes and my netbook on the car to unlock and open the doors for my wife. Unfortunately the car had just enough slope to it to overcome the co-efficient of friction and drop both the plastic container and my netbook to the ground. The plastic container was engineered so that it easily survived the 3 plus foot drop the netbook but not so much. I suffered severe trauma to the screen with multiple breaks running from top to bottom. It would still boot up and run but was not really usable.

Fortunately when I purchased the netbook I envisioned taking it everywhere and using it in many location and purchased the extended warranty from SquareTrade. This included accidental damage, so I contacted them and was instructed to ship the netbook to them in order to receive a check for my full purchase price. Since it would still boot up I was able to remove most the data from the hard drive and off it went.

That left me without my constant companion and a desire to replace it. I had only had it for a year and it had performed well with only an upgrade of the ram to 2GB from the stock 1GB. But I had a few issues with the netbook. It was a little small for viewing some sites or reading some documents and it was a little slow running some apps. As long as I was going to replace it I might as well see what had happened in the last year to the netbook market. After some research I found that Asus had marketed a 12" netbook with a dual core Atom paired with an Nvidia chipset. With my check from SquareTrade and my discount from Sears, it would only cost about $50 more than my recently departed netbook. So i should receive my Asus Eee PC 1201N-PU17 on Friday. It will supposed;y handle up to 8 GB of ram and ships with 2 GB. Although in the reviews most of the Bios are set to only recognize a little over 3 GB of ram no matter how much is installed. The CPU will run 64 bit OS so I may try out Ubuntu 10.4 64 bit instead of the Ubuntu 10.4 NBR I have been running. Any suggestions?

It comes with Win 7 installed, so I may get to play around with that for a little while in a dual boot just to see if it lives up to the hype. The only negative reviews I have found on this so far are that it does not have the battery life one would expect from a "netbook" at between 3.5-5 hours in normal use and it comes with a 250 gb HDD with 5400 rpm that makes for slower responses. Hopefully Asus will release a bios update eventually that will allow the full 8 Gb of ram but 3 Gb should be adequate for most of what I do. The Nvidia gpu is consistently getting great user reviews and does a great job with HD movies and 3D graphics.

If all goes well and I can keep it from jumping off tabletops or car fenders it will accompany me to the next LUG meeting.
