You COULD make one on a breadboard for around £6, but it's far more
hassle than it's worth at a beginner stage, I recommend a Freeduino!

The ioio has the advantage of being used with old Android devices, I think back to 1.6. There's also ADK boards (including arduino versions) that work I think from Android 2.1 up only (I'd have to check that to be sure though). For arduino/android things I generally use bluetooth so personally I don't have a need for adk, but it would allow you to do normal arduino stuff and use it with android.
It's also so nice to know you don't think I'm a sensor tart any more :-) ;-) :-)
