Hi,

I'm thinking of making a jar of fireflies (hopefully over the weekend)
as a birthday present and quite liked the look of this instructable:
http://www.instructables.com/id/Fireflies---Analog-version.../

I'm struggling a bit to find a component to use as the "cd4026b
combined counter and display driver IC" (at http://uk.rs-online.com
'cos there's a shop near me and I can just go and pick up the bits).

Can anyone help me find an equivalent counter please? I've found this,
http://uk.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=searchProducts&searchTerm=*4026*+counter&x=10&y=14
but it's out of stock. What terms should I be searching for?

Thanks,
nikki

"display counter" works for me:

http://uk.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=getProduct&R=6807169
LED Display Driver, 8 Ch Serial TSSOP24
The datasheet link doesn't work but it sounds like the right thing.

Hi,

Farnell seem to have them in stock and do next day delivery if you can wait that long. Only problem is they always want min £20 orders for card payment.

I realise you wanted something from rs, but thought I'd mention it as a last resort :)

Best wishes,

Andrew.

Hi Noel, thanks for the suggestion.

Surface mount is too small for what I want to do, and I'm not sure if
that chip outputs the a, b, c, d, e, f, g for the 7 segment display?
Will keep trying...

Andrew,
Thanks anyway - useful to look at the datasheet and try and pick up
some of the lingo. Minimum orders always a problem! :)

Hey Nikki,

I'm at work at the moment, but if I remember later, I'll tweet you the
equivalent from RS (who are just over the road from me)

You could try a 4033, though, whether that'll work I don't know - should be fine, as it's only for the human eye.

That circuit diagram looks familiar...

Yeah, think it was the 4033 I went for in the end. Thanks.
Not getting the parts 'til Monday though
