Friction (and others) have approached fizzPOP with regards to various
events, so that aspect of the future is looking hopeful, but the
regular, freestyle hacking will disappear unless we make alternative
arrangements.
We *could* return to pub function rooms, but I don't think there's any
real comparison and this would effectively kill off a lot of non-
laptop-based work and be several steps backwards.
So, pushed by the need to leave Friction and pulled by the benefits of
increased access and storage for projects and tools etc, I think we're
looking at having to rent a space of our own, preferably within the
same sort of Digbeth/Cheapside area to provide easy access for those
travelling in from outside Birmingham.
This raises questions about money, organisational structure and how
much you are willing to contribute to keep fizzPOP going.
I don't mind putting effort in to keep the admin ticking over, but
that's got to be on the understanding that others are giving their
support too.
We talked about constituting fizzPOP as a not-for-profit company
limited by guarantee and the implications of this for organisational
structure. Giving fizzPOP a legal identity is essential if we're going
to get involved with paying rent etc. I think we ideally need a 3rd
director of the company representing fizzPOP - currently it would
initially be myself and Antonio (both artists).
We also need a steering group of people willing to engage in making
decisions about how fizzPOP operates. If we had premises, then this
would conveniently map onto the group of people who pay for membership
for regular access to the space (rather than a more casual attendance
at the hack sessions/events). Until we reach that stage though, you'll
just have to ask yourself if you consider yourself an active member or
not.
We need a certain amount of information off people to be able to make
appropriate decisions over the coming months. Please spare a few
minutes to fill in this survey. It will be online until Wednesday
evening.
A poor response to the survey will send us the signal that maybe
fizzPOP should just fade out in the Autumn. If, however, you would
like to be a part of building something generally awesome, please
start here:

Those two responses contained some great feedback and suggestions - so
thank you to those two, much appreciated. Overall though, a kick in
the teeth bearing in mind how much work is being put into building up
fizzPOP.
The survey is up until Wednesday evening. Please spare a few minutes
to give us information that we can use to help ensure fizzPOP's
survival.

I've recently stumbled across fizzPOP and I had no idea a hackerspace
existed in Birmingham. I was living in the Rotunda (Birmingham City
Centre) until June 2009 and would have gotten involved had I known of
it's existence (I'm not sure how long fizzPOP has been around).
Unfortunately I'm living down in Portsmouth at the moment but I plan
on returning to Birmingham from time to time and would love to get
involved in something like this. I hope you manage to sort something
out so that it can continue to exist as I see the likes of NYC
Resistor moving into their own building and it makes me wish there was
a larger community here in the UK. I think one of the problems is
getting the word out there, I only stumbled across this from a link on
the MakerBot wiki that linked to a list of hackerspaces. Does fizzPOP
do any sort of promotion? There are three universities in the city
centre and I'm sure that people would love to get involved in this
sort of thing if they knew about it (I was a student at Aston and
there was nothing like this in the university).
I hope that fizzPOP stays around as I would love to take part in it. I
have a keen interest in computers, programming, electronics and 3D
printers (thanks to RepRap and MakerBot). I also have an array of
various unfinished electronics projects that I should really finish.

fizzPOP has been in existence for about a year now, but with hack
sessions being quite low key in various pub function rooms until we
started using The Edge in about July. Sorry our paths didn't cross
before you moved to Portsmouth!
Did you discover the Southampton group?

Promoting fizzPOP in the universities is something we've been talking
about for a long time and, personally, I think it should be high up on
our list of our priorities.
We've never quite got the manpower together though to go and put a few
posters up etc. :(
Any volunteers to do this? Ant's already got the poster designed - it
just needs putting up in suitable places.

Me! I can put posters up in Birmingham computer science department! :).
How mobile are you? Any chance you could put a few on the noticeboards
in University Centre, Main Library, Guild etc?

I really liked Peter's wordsmithing points about use of the term
'hackspace' (emphasis on the space and the infrastructure and what
happens there) rather than hackerspace (that subtly implies you have
to be a certain type of person to take part)
I vote for changing our logo wording to hackspace.
What do other people think?

Ant
I've set up a wiki page for logos and promotional materials
http://wiki.fizzpop.org.uk/Logos_and_promotional_materials
PDF's/SVG's and descriptions will be going up and on later but I'm
already rather late for a meeting!
Enjoy
It would be very much appreciated if you could spare a few minutes to
fill in the form at http://is.gd/7W0u0 .
We've had 6 responses so far - again, some really useful feedback, but
hardly a representative sample...
Thanks,

There are location and contact details on http://www.fizzpop.org.uk/contact/
to help you find us if you don't already know where The Edge is.
