I've asked John Pinner from the Linux Emporium (http://
www.linuxemporium.co.uk/) if we're able to use his conference room for
hacking activities and he's agreed to let us have it for one Saturday
a month on a trial basis.
Those of you who took part in the Ubuntu Bug Jam will know what a
great space it is. Here's <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ hellocatfood/tags/ubuntuglobalbugjamfebruary09/">a few pictures of the
space</a> from the event
As we're now half way through March I suggested that we start in
April. Currently we can go in either on 4th or 11th April. If you
could please add your preference to this http://doodle.com/7uvzedckcarzgztq . I'll close that poll on 23rd.
Just reminding you to vote on what day is best for the hack meet next
at the Linux Emporium. Please vote here http://doodle.com/7uvzedckcarzgztq The poll will close on Monday!

I knew there was something I was forgetting! I'll check with John now,
but I'd assume we'd be doing something like 12-6 as we wouldn't want
to keep the building open for too long. Yes, it's that address, and
I'll find out directions for trains/buses and post them up.

Have you confirmed the 11th with John Pinner yet? If so I can start
blogging etc confidently with a date, and start spreading the word.
As it is his companies offices we'll have to bear in mind what we can
do. My current idea is code hacking (probably Python myself, want a go
at that game??), and getting a electronics bread board and a bag of
electronic components and start learning some electronics! No
soldering required!

If it's the 11th I can turn up with aforementioned breadboard and bag'o'
electronic stuff (mostly LEDs and resistors but can always maplin my kit up
a bit before then; plus an arduino board)... I'd also be up for pythoning,
specially with an S60 flavour .... and maybe some AIML?

Sent him an e-mail before with the results of the poll but nothing
yet, hopefully tomorrow official response.
As it's his private accommodation numbers are limited to 12. To give
everyone a fair chance places will be on a first come first serve
basis. Pending response from John I'll open up tickets tomorrow from
3pm.

Seems fair to me, however my reply rate from John isn't brilliant. It may be best to ring him at the Linux emporium and leave a message or something.

Brilliant! I'll buy a small selection of my own, just to get me started. Python = good, however I don't know what an S60 is, or what AIML is.....
I'd like to come to the Emporium meet on the 11th.
I'll probably take the opportunity to get started with learning Python
whilst there are folk around to point me in the right direction.
I'll also set the challenge for someone to investigate the hardware
API for the touchatag RFID reader and see if they can sort something
out that lets me associate different actions with a tag being placed
onto the reader and with a tag being taken off the reader. I'm
interested in developing an interface built around several readers
that allows for setting puzzles that have to be solved by placing the
correct object (ie tag) in the correct location (ie over a specific
reader) in the correct order.

Tickets are now available for the meetup at Linux Emporium on 11th
April. Please book your place (one only please):
http://hellocatfood.eventwax.com/linux-emporium-meet/ there are, at
the time of writing, 11 tickets left (hey, I had to get one too!). As
a reminder the event starts at 11am and will be finished by 6pm. Could
you please state dietary requirements on the form
And for bus travel catch the 116 from town to Kingsbury Road. You can
get exact details by searching on www.travelinemidlands.co.uk
I called the Emporium earlier and they said they *may* be able to
offer lifts from Chester Road train station to the venue. Can I get a
show of hands of people who may need lifts? If attendees want to offer
their car for lifts to/from the station please arrange this on or off
the list.
As we'll be there all day we may need some eats! Luckily for us there
is an Asda nearby and the Emporium has a kitchen. Once a few people
have arrived we can head out to get food. I suggest we just buy some
snacks (pizza, crisps etc) and then people chip in to cover costs at
the end
Any other questions?

I'll probably be getting a train to Chester Road in the morning. But
arrive earlier than the 11am start time, so I can *start* at 11am!
Anyone else feel like getting the train? It's very easy and
convienent. They hold Python WM at Linux Emporium and quite a few of
us get the train in. It does make it easier if we all turn up at the
same time though!

I nabbed a ticket. Didn't see this thread though, so missed out about
the part to state dietary requirements; I'm vegetarian FYI. I was
planning on bring my own food, or buying some there like you say. :)
I think I'll be meeting up with you guys via bus... I'll be improving
the journey for the rest of the way, but I'll aim to get there for
around 11.
i can only come after 12 (so more like 1 by the time i'd get there,
work sucks) so not going to nab a ticket but if theres spare space
i'll be there :)

Hi, I've been lurking on the list, mainly because Liverpool is a bit too far from Birmingham for me to be able to use the hackspace, but am interested in hearing what's happening.
Anyway, onto Touchatag...
A friend of mine, Andrew Williams <http://tensixtyone.com/>, has been playing around with the Touchatag (formerly known as Tikitag) reader, and has been writing a Python library to let you access it without having to use the standard Touchatag software. It's still a work in progress, but the code is available at <http://bzr.tensixtyone.com/pytikitag/files> and he's hoping to get a 0.1 release out in the next month.
Well if your ever in Birmingham feel free to seek us out.

OooooOOoo Very cool. Will have a look at that during the hack meeting definately!
They do kits(http://www.bitsbox.co.uk/select.html#ElectronicsClub) The
price seems reasonable to me, never bought electronics before and I'm
too lazy go hunt around. I think the kits are meant to tie up with the
projects here.

Saturday's main mission is to hook the wings up to some Pythonage
(hence I need to learn Python) so the kids can use it to respond to
questions on the screen. Probably.

Another python RFID option would be RFIDIOt <http://rfidiot.org/>, which I didn't think supported Touchatag but looking at the docs just now I see that it's listed.
