Changing the thread slightly, found a booklet in the Australian natural history section of a second-hand bookstore in Eumundi,SEQ called "Kodak's Australian Animals" (or something like that).Wasn't dated but looked to me to have been published around the 1930's.
It contained a photo and brief text about a bird named and captioned as a Black Fantail, which was in fact a Willie Wagtail (which the booklet gave as an italicized alternative name).
I can't remember ever coming across this name in any other Australian bird books.

Hi Russ,
My previously mentioned CSIRO Index of Australian Bird names list the
following for Willie Wagtail.
"Australian Nightingale", black and white fantail, black and white
flycatcher,, frog bird, morning bird, shepherd's companion.

Cheers John

I think I might start using Australian Nightingale.

For a few months now I've been kept awake by a night owl of a Willie Wagtail
who seems to start calling at 9pm and finally shuts up at 7am.

Hi all,

The other GREAT BOOK that no one has mentioned during this entire thread (and that staggers me that you all either don't have one or don't use it) is a little known tome by a certain Neville W Cayley called What Bird is That.

Neville lists the latin and the derivation of names as done by a Mr H Wolstenholme of Sydney:

Willie Wagtail
Rhipidura leucophrys
leuc-o-phrys - Gk,
leucos - white: Gk,
phrys (phrus) - brow.

Far more interesting than common names anyway;-)

If you don't have one most 2nd hand bookshops will have half a dozen or so!

Best

Alan

Yes, my apologies, I only have hardback ones and had forgotten that. If purchasing examine book first and caveat emptor ;-)

I've also been meaning to mention over the last few days that Serventy &
Whittell 1976 [Birds of Western Australia (UWA Press, Perth)] provide
Aboriginal names for many birds species that occur in Western Australia.
Unfortunately, they do not provide Aboriginal names for the Black-necked
Stork.

While on the subject of the Willie Wagtail, Serventy & Whittell list the
following Aboriginal names:

Jind-ril (Godfrey's Tank, Canning Stock Route), Chitti-chitti (Coolawanyah &
Palinup River), Chee-ri-gal (North West Cape), Jindy-jindy (Lyons River),
Tjittee tjitee (Jigalong), Chindi-chindil (Warburton Range), Wil-ar-ing,
Wil-laring (Perth)and Jit-te-jit-te (Avon River).

Leach, An Australian Bird Book (my copy is 1950) is another interesting
early Australian field guide, not as popular as Cayleys, he also called
the Willy Wagtail the Black and White Fantail. Leachs book has lots of
interesting information but the colour reproductions are terrible.

G'day

Black Fantail was a name given by Gould to the Willie - according to
Macdonald "Australian Birds by Common Name"

Caley also uses the names:

Black & White Fantail
Shepherd's Companion
Willy Wagtail

SO it does not matter whether you spell it Willie or Willy - I like that

Cheers

Mike

My edition of Leach (1916!) uses Black and White Fantail too, but the latin
Rhipidura motacilloides (tricolor).
Why 'tricolor' I wonder: surely it should be 'bicolor'?

Paul.
