Hi all,
In a recent email correspondence, mention was made of a birder's most
embarrassing omission from their life list.

I have MANY I could choose from, such as Tree Sparrow, Red-whiskered
Bulbul, etc. etc. etc.

However, possibly my biggest 'bogey-bird' (though not necessarily
"embarrassing") is Owlet Nightjar.

I wonder if some other 'gun-birders' would be bold enough to share
some of their most embarrassing omissions, or biggest bogeys?

G'day John

Square-tailed Kite for me. They migrate to the Grampians and adjacent
areas every year and others see them. I never do.

I think my bogey bird would have to be Chestnut Rail. After three trips to
Darwin and approximately 6 searches/stakeouts over probably 12 hours in
total, still not seen!

Superb Fruit-dove for me - many forays into rainforest around Sth
East Queensland , trips to Cairns and Cape York over many years and
still no cigar. Do they exist?

It took me about as long to get that rail too and again 3 trips to Darwin. But no I still have not seen the speckled warbler even although I live in Victoria. I have seen Noisy Scrub-bird, all the grasswrens etc - a lot of difficult birds in other states but no speckled warbler or for that matter Sooty Owl!!

I think we all have bogey birds.

Cheers,

Most frustrating for me was this time last year going out to Birdsville
through gibber and spinifex country and being so busy with work that I
didn't have time to chase down the Gibber Bird and Spinifex Bird- among
others. I did manage quite a few lifers along the way however.

Second most frustrating, over the years I have seen a lot more birds than I
have recorded across Australia having only recently decided to keep a list.

Mine would be Canada Geese.

I had plenty of opportunity to tick this bird at the 3 locations they turned
up on the south coast of NSW but for some reason the bird does not appeal on
my list.

Canada Goose the most embarrassing omission from your life list Edwin? I am more embarrassed about the fact I have Canada Goose ON my Australian list.

{Mind you I think the two nameless Sydney birders who went for the recent Canada Geese the afternoon after they were 'removed' have a good case for naming it!}

John,

I'm no GUN birder, but I have my accomplished moments.

Brush Bronzewing and Lewin's Rail are my two big bogey birds. It's embarrassing to admit I've been birding in Sydney for about twenty years and I've not seen either!

No shame in that Lorne, I'm not sure they exist either...Definitely
the worst omission for me too.

Or Plum Headed Finch, which I've been to Capertee 5 times for.

How's this then. For someone with a life list of 734 I've still not seen
a Flock Pigeon - mainly because I haven't been to Boulia yet.

When I was Ranger at Dharug National Park, Wiseman's Ferry, NSW in the early
to mid 1980s I had Lewin's Rails calling below the residence at Mill Creek
daily. Although not as common as the Common Bronzewing the Brush Bronzewing
was regularly observed in the Park. Maybe a trip to Dharug would put you
both out of your misery!!
