Hi Greg,
Australian breeding STSh have two alternate feeding strategies. One is to do
short trips to nearby waters and feed their chicks relatively fresh food, no
doubt with plenty of roughage. The other is to make a longer trip, lasting
more than a week, almost to the Antarctic continent. They then return with

Re. Greg Roberts observations of Short-tailed Shearwaters in Antarctica
Short-tailed Shearwaters forage a surprisingly long way to the west in Antarctic waters. Approaching from the west I encountered the first Short-tailed Shearwaters at 60S 82E on 15th March 2007. This longitude is about the 'centreline' of the Indian Ocean and bisects Sri Lanka. I saw several hundreds each day until 20th March, 64S 105E before heading north. There were a few Sooty Shearwaters in the same area and many icebergs.

Whilst that is true it seems the last time I looked that the majority of
sightings were from SA - there were very few Vic records for example
compared to Eremaea. I think both sites have their good and not so good
features, but it seems few people outside SA are convinced enough to use
Birdpedia. Eremaea of course also allows sightings to be sent to the Atlas -

It would be good in some ways to see the current list of WA sightings on
Eremea. The mega sightings are already posted. I was approached to
moderate it, but I don't have time. I have often fallen behind on the
current list. There are a few reasons for not simply switching to Eremea.
Birds Australia WA prints a quarterly newsletter WA Bird Notes. This
