I have recently read Life on lands edge, about Roebuck Bay, Broome and also
a british based book, wader behaviour, both of which were very informative.
what I am wondering is people can recommend a book(s) that covers
shorebirds in australia in terms of their life here as well as at their
breeding grounds. Natural history prose rather than scientific writing

 Hi All,
Here's a trip report for the pelagic that got out off Portland, western Vic on the weekend. Now that the boat based at Port Fairy has been sold and trips from there have ceased, this was a trial of a potential vessel for more regular use. Chris Lester remains the primary organiser for the Birds Australia VicGroup Pelagics off western Victoria. In due course he will make a post concerning future arrangements.

 Hi Tom,
You ask: "Where did you find reference to buttonquails being 'Shorebirds'?"
It's quite simple.
The family "Turnicidae" which contains the button-quail is now included in the order
"Charadriiformes".
Ergo, button-quail are 'shorebirds.......as are skuas, jaegers, noddies, terns and gulls.
Using the same novel way of thinking all Passeriformes can be called 'crows'.

I agree Paul. It was great to have a Twitter feed for the Twitchathon.
One could easily setup some twitter hashtags for this and other birding
events. that would allow tweeters to post live sightings, and others could
follow based on the hashtag, not the person themselves. Here is an example
of how this would have worked on the weekend:

 Hi Brian,
I encountered a Painted Button-Quail nest a couple of years ago and the
female flushed off the nest at about 10m distance but didn't make a broken
wing display. That isn't to say they never do (after all, they are
shorebirds!) but my only experience so far is that they haven't. The nest
had eggs (3 from memory, but it was a while ago).

 G'day all,
has anyone ever seen or heard of a Painted Button-quail pretending it has a broken wing to distract an observer from nearby eggs or chicks? I saw one acting this way today (could not see any nest or chicks nearby though) and was wondering whether the bird might actually have had a broken wing - it seemed to.

Charles, you can try Durai - just ask for him at the information centre.
He's very well known and well-regarded - almost the godfather of Fraser's
Hill birding. He tends to be busy, though, so may not be able to devote a
lot of time for you.
Alternatively, if you don't mind paying a guide, I can recommend Cheong Weng
