Yesterday, I emailed the Victorian DPI to bring to their attention the matter of them including Mallard on their do not shoot list. I have just received a response thanking me for bringing the matter to their attention and that they will update their website "to reflect the legal status of this duck".

Well done, but I wonder if it'll result in many being shot. I would have thought most mallards people encounter are either in areas where shooting isn't allowed, or are domestic stock.

Mallards are not silly. They have figured out that it is a better idea to hang around urban areas and get their food brought to them by the bag full.
