Debate is raging on another forum about the ID of a raptor. Some of the guesses are outrageous. Can some of you please have a look at

http://www.aussieslivingsimply.com.au/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=42&thread_id=8988#post_110873

and give your opinions.
Thanks

Collared Sparrowhawk, if it's the size of a magpie like they say.

Certainly NOT a black-shouldered kite or grey falcon.

I'd opt for Brown Goshawk or Collared Sparrowhawk. Certainly not
Black-shouldered Kite, Grey Goshawk or Grey Falcon. I'm not sure
there is enough to go on to pick between Brown Goshawk and Collared
Sparrowhawk - "About the size of...." is notoriously unreliable, and
I'm not sure the standard of the pic gives enough else to distinguish
between them, bu I may be proved wrong on that.

I would go with Brown Goshawk, the clearly rounded tail is visible in the
third photo.
I laughed when I saw some of the suggestions, some included Black-shouldered
Kite and Grey Goshawk, one man was certain it was a Grey Falcon from a quick
glance at the Simpson & Day! Another man was ready to put a 10 dollar wager
down on the bird being a grey Goshawk!!
It looks like these "Aussies living simply" may need to start practising
their identification skills. We will know when those Aussies should stick to
living simply when one of them suggest the first photo is of a pigeon and
the second is of any aeroplane! A bit of fun.
All in all, at least they are giving it a go!

Recently a most helpful pictorial 'Aus Raptors in Flight ID Guide' was
developed and a link posted on this site. Thankyou for that excellent work.

It looks like it would also be very helpful if some kind soul, with a large
photo collection, developed a funny poses, and from the back guide to
raptors (maybe others too) as this is the second question like this in a
short time,
Wendy

Not much to go on, but inasmuch as the evidence is available from the photo and assuming it is a wild bird in Australia and no funny tricks of lighting etc, there is only one possibility and that is Brown Goshawk.

"All in all, at least they are giving it a go!"Don't forget that there are a group of mere mortals who are members of birding-aus too! Although we're all learning, it's just that some of us are on the steeper end of the learning curve than others, as we all have to start somewhere! Let's encourage people to learn by sharing our knowledge, and not put down their valiant efforts (although we've gotta have a chuckle now and then as we remember our own mistakes along the way). Rant over, thanks for listening.

On another note, I had a funny incident with an old cat today - it was in my backyard stalking something so I shooed it away, then it got stuck up on the fence trying to escape, and as it nearly fell off (not at all gracefully, as I had understood cats should be), it decided to stay put and was too scared to come down - I felt a bit of an idiot trying to rescue a cat, but the owners came and took it away so hopefully I won't see it again. I'd say its hunting days are numbered :)
