ITIS Database in Oracle script files?
Hi Diane, I ran across your 2002 letter on the Internet and was curious if you ever found the script files for converting the ITIS database to Oracle? I am facing the same task. I have found directions for converting it to MySQL but was hoping that maybe the ORACLE conversion was available. Thank you for reading my letter and any advice you can give on this matter.... more »

Uniprot and EMBL question
Hi, I am trying to return the embl entries for a list of uniprot entries. I use the following command. getz '(@testing > embl)' where the file testing contains: uniprot:CYGB_MOUSE uniprot:GLB1_SCAIN The output is: EMBL:AK019410 EMBL:MMU315163 EMBL:BC055040 Is there any way of viewing the Uniprot ID's aswell as the EMBL ID;... more »

dear bionet.software.srs readers
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 It's getting a bit tiresome seeing one misguided American after another with their cutsie little yellow or red-white-blue ribbons on their outsized SUVs. Yeah, I guess it's the thing to do; maybe part of that whole soccer-mom culture. Unfortunately, the only thing they demonstrate is that the person... more »

Question about amino acid substitution matrices
Hi, I'm a student of biology and one of my main focuses is bioinformatics. At the moment I'm preparing for my final exam. I read about that there are different bit units in different amino acid substitution matrices, e.g. the BLOSUM62 Matrix, which is scaled in 1/2 bit units or the PAM 250, in 1/3 bits (Bioinformatics, Mount, D.W.). I... more »

BIOSCI/Bionet has a new home
Dear BIO-SRS readers, BIOSCI/Bionet is the long-running Biology news and discussion groups. The management of these groups has been handled ably at MRC/Rosalind Franklin Centre for several years now. They are turning over management to me, Don Gilbert, at Indiana University Biology department. The MRC/RFC folks deserve our thanks for their devotion to... more »
