In my search of literature, I noted the scientists have reported presence of Orientobilharzia bomfordi and O.chini from Sicuan province of China. ORIGIN OF SCHISTOSOMES ; STATUS OF BIVITELLOBILHARZIA In the evolutionary scale proboscids (elephants) have originated during late ecocene epoch while ungulates evolved much later. For this reason, schistosomes of proboscids may be considered Parental stock from which schistosomes of ungulates evolved. Though there are numerous schistosome species affecting ungulates , there is only one genus i.e. Bivitellobilharzia with two species which is known to occur in elephants. B.loxodonte occurs in African elephants and B.nairi in Indian elephants. The snail host for B.loxodonte is a Planorbid while that of B.nairi is still not confirmed.... more »
