About the Event

Sunday Streets and “open streets” events across the country have roots in a program called Ciclovia that started in Bogotá, Colombia over thirty years ago. Today there are over 70 of this type of event across North America, which temporarily close streets to automobile traffic, opening them up for people to walk, bike, play, dance and socialize.

Gil Peñalosa, as Bogotá’s Commissioner of Parks, Sport and Recreation in the late 1990s, revamped the Ciclovia program, transforming it into an internationally recognized weekly program which attracts over 1.3 million to people walk, run, skate and bike along 75 miles of Bogotá’s city streets. Today he is an international leader in creating great cities through active public spaces.

San Francisco is a national leader in the “open streets” movement. Sunday Streets was one of the first of its kind in the U.S. when it began in 2008, and today we host events with more frequency than nearly any other city in the country.

Sunday Streets has proven wildly popular with the public, beneficial to local businesses, and has opened up access to healthy, free physical activity to tens of thousands of people each year. The program is a public-private partnership that has been able to accomplish all of this at a fraction of what it would have cost to build a new park or greenway.

Together, Mayor Lee and Gil Peñalosa will join with local partners to celebrate five great years of Sunday Streets and inspire us to think about what’s next for San Francisco and the entire Bay Area. We look forward to sharing our experiences with our neighbors from across the Bay Area.

PLEASE NOTE: The event will take place on the route of Sunday Streets, so we encourage you to arrive by bike, foot, or BART (24th Street / Mission station is several blocks away). Sunday Streets runs 11 am – 4 pm. For more information, including the complete route, visit www.sundaystreetssf.com.

RSVP: Space is limited. Please RSVP on this page: http://bit.ly/Kshn5wby May 30th.
