Once again, we had two productive meetings. Our morning meeting had two members of the Active Living Board present, in addition to the "regulars". They had some exciting news that many will appreciate. Our night meeting at McGowans Pub had over 300 attend. Most stayed for the jazz concert at Scottish Rite. Here is the way the meetings went, according to the agenda.
Bike to Work Month. Busy schedule by the ALB. Ending the months promotion is the sponsoring of Bike Valet (ABC) at the Decatur Arts Fest by Bicycle South, and the ALD. Let us know if you want to volunteer.
Signals/lights in Decatur. There has been a fair amount of discussion about the lights that dont detect bicyclist, signals that only last 30 seconds, etc. We had a bike suitability map that Fred B. wanted us to pass around and identify the bad ones that cyclist are aware of. You can still weigh in on this on this forum or the FB page. Decatur is about to re-do all the signals anyhow, so we are poised to make all lights in the city bicycle friendly. Also, if you want to be part of this "committee", chime in please.
Bike Decatur Mobile Social is going well. Walt Massey of the Southern Bike League asked if he could promote this ride on his SBL Meetup. We said yes, and as of today they had twelve sign up! We also discussed that this ride is ideal for clunkers, classics, cruisers, non bike ride bikes. So dust off that old bike in the shed and get on it and ride. Our June Mobile Social is the same night as Decatur Beach Party (Fri, June 14), so the theme of the ride is cabana wear, beach wear, hawaiian shirts, hula skirts, etc. All BDMS's leave the Church St MARTA at 630p.
There was a lively discussion of the "Idaho law". Bicycles yield at stop signs, stop at red lights and go when safe. This will need a lot of education to the public and police. Let us know if you want to be part of this committee.
The ALB has a project that they want to get going with and need input and support. They want to make the connection from the "Dead End Bike Lane" at the bottom of the PonceDeLeon bike lane @ Scott Blvd, to the top of Deepdene park, then from the bottom of Deepdene park, to Clifton road. Their plan is to keep this all on the east side of the road. A great project for all Decatur cyclists, even though none of it is in the city. If this is near and dear to you, please speak up and get on this committee.
Bike Decatur's valet is still in discussion. There is a goal to have it up and running by the September Concerts on the Square.
New items that came up were -
What is the status of the Church St reconstruct??
What is the status of the N McDonough cycle track?? And all three RR crossings??
Drop off from PATH/sidewalk on the Green St/ Trolley line PATH near Oakview Rd/S McDonough. PATH wants riders to stay on PATH until intersection, but many cyclist drop of the curb on to dead end street leading to a shared driveway. Riders feel this is a safety hazard and a curb cut should be installed at the end of the dead end street near the driveways. discuss.....
If there is something I missed, please add to this list.
Ride on..........
