...*************************** ****************************** ***"Think of bicycles as rideable art that can just about save the world." -- Grant Petersen *******PHOTOGRAPHING TRANSPORTSpotted on the website of the American Association of State Highwayand Transportation Officials (AASHTO): "For the first time in itseight-year history, the Faces of Transportation photo contest isbeing opened to the general public … Sponsored by AASHTO, this year'stheme is 'Framing the Benefits of Transportation.' AASHTO stronglyencourages every submission to prominently feature people designing, constructing, using, and enjoying the transportation system of theirstate." Now wouldn't it be great to see photos of people bicycling(and utilizing other people-powered modes of transportation) pouringin at such a rate that it overwhelms the judges? Cash prizes will beawarded -- so spread the word and/or enter the competition yourself.July 31 is the deadline for submissions. [link] *******U.S. BICYCLE ROUTE SYSTEM CAMPAIGN KICKS INTO HIGH GEARDo you love to bike? Do you wish that your friends would havethe gumption to join you in your bicycle-travel adventures? AdventureCycling is working with a number of other organizations to build anational network of bicycle routes, known collectively as the U.S.Bicycle Route System (USBRS). These routes would be signed, numbered, approved by State Departments of Transportation, and easily accessiblefor both road-weathered and newbie cyclists. Our May fundraiser tohelp build the USBRS is in high gear; so far we've raised over $20,000! Butwe have a long way to go before hitting our $50,000 goal by May 31.Without your help, we cannot make this project a reality. We need yourdonation today, so we're sweetening the deal! If you give $25 or moreto help build the U.S. Bicycle Route System by Sunday, May 20, youmight win a set of special-edition Ortlieb panniers. Donate $100 ormore and you'll receive a Walz cycling cap designed especially forthe USBRS campaign, while supplies last. Click the link below to donate now:[link] to help spread the word? Learn how to get involved:[link] TALE OF TRAGEDY AND TRIUMPH Noel Pederson wrote Bike Bits with this inspirational tale: "In2007, something went terribly wrong with Mark Stephan's bike duringa weekend bike ride. His front wheel unexpectedly disengaged fromthe bicycle, catapulting Mark over the handlebars and onto theground, paralyzing him from the neck down. The accident left him aquadriplegic, and doctors were blunt: life in a wheelchair was thebest he could expect. Shattering all expectations, Mark left thehospital less than five months after his accident -- walking underhis own power. Two years after the accident, he climbed 103 floorsto the top of the tallest building in North America. While doctors, family, and friends were puzzled and shocked that this was possible,Mark had already set his sights on a new adventure: a3,129-mile bike ride across the United States. On April 15th, thejourney began! With each mile on the bike, Mark is transforming astory of tragedy into one of perseverance and the power of the humanspirit." Sylvie and her friends are embarking on a tour of the WestCoast this month; all students at or graduates of Pitzer College inClaremont, California, the four will ride self-supported, no SAG,"just full panniers and helmet cameras" as they follow the PacificCoast Bicycle Route from Seattle to Los Angeles. Why the helmet cams?"Our ride is unique in that we will be filming it and submitting ourfinal product to the Banff Mountain Film Festival, The Bike FilmFestival, and the Adventure Film Festival," Sylvie wrote. The groupwould like to invite Bike Bits readers to follow their blog, whichSylvie promises will be "hilarious as well as informative." It canbe found here: [link] *******SINGING "DEAD SKUNK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD" If you're heading out on a road trip yourself this summer -- or evenif you just commute to work by bicycle -- you can help the Adventurersand Scientists for Conservation collect data on roadkill along ourhighways and byways. Cyclists are obviously ideal participants insuch a project, as they see (and smell) much more than do thosetravelers encased in fast-moving automobiles. Go to the followinglink to learn more:[link] *******HIGH ON FRYE Russ Frye, a member of our self-contained TransAm tour group thatdeparted from Williamsburg, Virginia, earlier this month, is postingon his blog as he goes. A retired teacher, Russ now works part timefor a company that manages the hiring process for large corporations. And, as you will quickly realize if you tap into "Tailwindz," he alsohas a sense of humor. We think it's going to be worthwhile to followRuss' blog as he goes, joining him and his group-mates on a vicariousvelo-adventure across America. AnAdventure Cycling member from Australia, 60-year-old Alasdair Sinclair,is pedaling across America to raise money for the children's medicalcharity, Operation Smile. "I've only been to America once before," hesaid, "and that was 25 years ago. On that trip, I saw only cities. Thistime, I look forward to discovering the heart of the country." Alasdairadded that he's looking forward to dropping in at the Missoulaheadquarters of Adventure Cycling when he reaches Montana. "I lookforward to meeting friendly people and having a wonderful experience, while raising money to help children in developing countries who sufferfrom cleft lip or cleft palate," he said. Butwe sure like it when we do, and that's exactly what the BicycleBarnstorming Tour is -- a tour organized by the Utah HeritageFoundation, focused on the complementary activity of visiting anddocumenting historic barns. Taking place in the downright gorgeouslandscapes of the Sevier Valley and the Little Denmark/Sanpete Countyarea of south-central Utah, the ride happens June 10 through 13. "Thepurpose of the event is to begin updating and expanding an outdated barnguide, while promoting cycling and heritage tourism on the backroadsand in the rural communities of the Mormon Pioneer National HeritageArea."
