It seems there are a lot of opinions here about what to train in.

I have had quite a lot of years experience in training.

Boxing - Very effective as there are only a handful of punches to learn and
therefore hone and master
Thai Boxing - as above but with added bonus of feet/shins/elbows added to
the carnage
Shaolin Kung Fu (Double Dragon Jin Wu Koon) - was an interesting form -
traditional shaolin animal styles, great for discipline etc but didn't feel
it was all that practical in the street (personally) but a great school
aptmosphere!
Choy Lee Fut Kung Fu - Long range flowing circular DEVASTATING! One of the
most beautiful styles (visually) I have seen & trained in.

Lawrence Lee International Kung Fu - THIS IS GROUND BREAKING STUFF!!!
Lawrence lee is in my opinion, second to no one in the world! (I'm not
kidding)!
He's one of Sydney's best kept secrets. Mainly training to private students
that he feels he can trust with this knowledge!
If you like the style and humour of Jackie Chan and the speed of Bruce Lee -
Lawrence has basically picked up where Bruce left.
Continuing the quest to create the MOST EFFECTIVE martial arts system in the
world!
He is a martial scientist who has taken the arts to a progressive level that
no one before has done!
He can also back up everything he teaches and welcomes questions!

I know it sounds far fetched but all you have to do is have a lesson with
him to see what I mean.
If anyone is interested in Sydney feel free to contact me at

I am always interested in Kung Fu. That's what I will be doing after I
graduate from Uni. I will be joining a "club" that also performs dragon
dances during special occasions and Chinese new Year. I have always wanted
to be in the Dragon Dance Crew since I was a very young kid.......

Get some Wushu up ya! =0)

The best Wushu guys can do stuff that looks like they are using cables.
Multiple mid air turns and spins, flying spin kicks and all that, it looks
very impressive.

I will see if I can find the video clips I had of some examples.

Choy Lee Fut kung fu sounds very similar to min chin do, with flowing
motion, you also get to learn many weapons such as staff, butterfly swords,
nunchucks and double sticks with the theory that if you can use the weapon
you can defend against it

I had a Chinese maths teacher at school in the late 1970's (probably unusual
then) who was involved with the GIANT DRAGON in Melbourne that they did for
the new year and Moomba. He got me and a few of the other roundeye kids
involved in it and we helped out inside the dragon during rehearsals, had a
great time and knocked off some fireworks too.

thanks

if you want to train in the one of the ultimate martial arts i would
recommend Wing Chun. Bruce Lee practised it before developing Jeet Kune Do.

A few sites of interest:

http://www.wingchunkuen.com/journal/features/chu_mind.shtml
http://www.wing-chun.com.au/

i would also recommend you researching Tai Chi. People laugh when I suggest
that Tai Chi is the most powerful martial art in existence, but little do
they know that the ultimate power comes from within. And that's what Tai Chi
is all about.

anyways, good to see that there are other people out there who appreciate
the various martial arts around.

if we didn't behave.

I suppose when it comes down to it.
The best martial Art is one which suits the practioner best.

All Martial Arts contain good skills and training.
But to keep your enthusiasm going over years you need to study an art you
can excel in by your physical abilities.

e.g.
If you are solid in build with limited flexibility there is not much use
training in an art that requires lots of kicking and jumping.
If you are a lightweight there is little use practising an art that requires
the fight goes to ground grappliing.

Try a few different martial arts out initially. There are many around.
Pick an Art that you feel comfortable doing that is of interest to you.
You should be also comfortable with the atmosphere within the school and the
attitudes of the teacher and students

A good traditional Style under Kyoshi Cebrano

There are many good emphasis on getting power thru speed in the style.
The Style is also suitable I feel for many different sorts of physical
capabilities and limitations.

The practise of Katas within the system teach great balance and excellence.

In the context of Self Defense remember though , that it can be taught
effectively over a shorter time than a martial art.
Any Martial Art concerntrates on excellence and perfecting movement and are
indeed arts.

Straight forward self defense is much different prioities and can bne taught
effectively over a much shorter time frame.
