I am Gareth. I'm 19 and come from the Gloucestershire, in the South-
West of England.
I am currently in my First Year of a Mathematics and Computer Science
Degree at the Unviersty of Bristol.
I am not the most experienced programmer but I hope my motivation and
determination to achieve will allow me to overcome my lack of
experience and succeed in the project, if I am selected. I have
experience with C, Java and Haskell so hopefully this should give me a
good backbone to working with BigBlueButton.
Hopefully you can give me some advice and guidance!

My proposal is the creation of a module for BigBlueButton that allows
users to upload files to a conference:
• Backend using Java that allows the communication with Tomcat.
• Graphical interface within BigBlueButton that allows selection of
files and uploading of them to the server.
• Frontend interface using Flex and Actionscript that is simple and
easy to use but functional.
• Notifications of upload/download completion in the BigBlueButton
Chat area
• Progress bar for upload.
• Ability to upload before start of conference or during the
conference.

Any comments or help is much appreciated,
Thanks,
Gareth Knowles

Hi Gareth,

Great to hear you're interested, sorry nobody has replied to you quickly. Here's some feedback:
- No worries if you lack for experience, we're evaluating the quality of proposals submitted, so just make sure you submit a kick-ass proposal.
- I agree with all your points, that's pretty much exactly what we're looking for in this idea
- Some GUI mock-ups could go a long way - give us your vision of what the module will look like
- Download a bbb VM and play with it, or if you have time - install bbb from source. Since you say you lack experience but not motivation, a lot of people starting out find installing bbb from source a great experience builder and also an exercise in persistence

HI Denis,
Thanks for your reply, really appreciate it.

Hopefully my proposal is kick-ass! :)
I have uploaded a GUI mock-up now, would love some feedback on it, it
is here: http://gskspurs.co.uk/MockGUIwithLables.jpg
I have already managed to get BBB working from source on my VMware
install of Ubuntu 9.10.
I had a small issue with it not displaying the BBB page, getting a
"Welcome to nginx" message instead.
I managed to fix this by copying the contents of the /etc/nginx/sites-
available/bigbluebutton file to the /etc/nginx/sites-available/default
file. I then restarted all the services, including restarting nginx.
Now have BBB fully installed from Source and working! I found the
use of vi to edit files really interesting as I have never used it
before, the fact that its on all Linux installs and can be used
straight from the console makes it really useful!

Hi Gareth,

Thanks for your proposal. It looks good. The timeline is detailed and I like the GUI mock ups a lot.
We'll be reviewing proposals this weekend, and we'll let everyone know how it goes.

Thanks!
