Here's the short.. Many UAV systems are arduino or microprocessor
based. I created a pic based I/O board than handles analog and
digital inputs and outputs as well as 8 10-bit servo drives with no
jitter. All sensors (accelerometers, altimeter, compass) are custom
or custom interface. The UAV project is based on the gumstix verdex,
but is transitioning to the bifferboard. Having the ability to build
code on the board and download packages without using toolchains, or
other complications greatly sped and simplified development.
Communications to the base planning and tracking station are handled
using 802.11 wireless supported by the linux os. All-in-all, its an
extremely low-cost system. The bifferboard registers about 56bogomips
whereas the pxa270 verdex registers about 600. Although less
powerful, the bifferboard still has much more power than I need - plus
4GB usb disk storage space!!
Currently, the UAV is undergoing glide tests to examine control
stability. Then it will move to a powered platform for additional
testing ( Electri-Cub with 5' wingspan ). The total autonomy package
weights 10 oz.
