Subject: Son Hub problem/question
Hi Everyone,

I got a Used SON Classic hub from a friend a few months ago. I know he
got it from Peter White.  Got a wheel built around it, but never got a
chance to hook the lights up, mainly because I was "doored" back in
July, and only started riding again six weeks ago.

Anyway, hooked up the wheel, no lights attached, and noticed that it
occassionally makes a "puckety-pucety-puckety" sound as it turns
around. I can feel something vibrating in my hand as well. However,
when I start to ride the bike, it goes away. I don't feel any undue
resisistance when rolling either.

I hooked up the lights and they do seem to work if I spin the wheel in
my hand. Front light is Schmidt Edelux. Rear light is a Busch & Muller
seculite plus.

Is this normal, or do I have a big problem here? I ask as I am set to
take my bike to my LBS and have the front light mounted to my bag
rack, my rear light mounted to the fender and have the lines run.

Thanks in advance,

Ty Smith

The hub should feel rough when you spin it in your hand & you will feel vibration. On the road you'll feel little resistance but can feel some vibration at speed. Sounds normal to me.

The "notchiness" is due to the magnets in the hub.

The notchiness is normal; the sound doesn't sound right, though.  Do you
hear it while riding?  Or only while turning it by hand?  If it's loud
enough that you hear it while riding, I would be a little concerned that
there's something wrong.

Thanks everyone!

I only hear the sound when I am spinning it by hand. It seems quiet
and resistance-free when riding.  It definitley does power the lights.

Just ride it. When held in your hand you can feel the vibration or notchiness
but riding it, you'll forget it's there. I have a couple of the SON hubs and a
SRAM I-light. The SONs are noticeably smoother than the SRAM, in my hand. On
the road, I don't feel or see a difference.

If you feel vibration or hear anything when the hub is in the fork, it's
probably because the skewer isn't tight enough.

Thanks everyone! Looks like all is ok based upon what you are all
saying. I really appreciate you taking the time out to address this
for me.

My Salsa Casseroll is  at the shop now! Very excited to have a true
Randonneur bike, capable of mulit-day trips... even if I'm not! ;)

At least, not yet...

Subject: Re: {BL} Son Hub problem/question
Update on my lighting situation. To recap, I have a used SON classic
hub, which I got from a trusted source. I have a new Schmidt Edelux,
and  a new B&M Seculite tailight, which were brought from a LBS who
deals directly with Peter White. Wiring and mounting hardware were
bought the same way.

Got Edelux hooked up front. It is on my front rack. It is the right
way up.  I have the seculite mounted on the rear fender. It is
grounded. I used only the wires from Peter's shop, and all the
connections seems good.

Everything seems to work at a basic level, but I am very disapointed
with the headlight output. The light comes on when switched to "On" or
"standlight" (if at night). The only issue is the light output from
the Edelux is very poor, like a very low watt standard headlight. I
have the Ixon IQ light as well, which has the same optics, and I would
say it is at least three times as powerful as the headlight. The
capicitor on the Edelus seems fine a as the light does stay on for a
few minutes after I stop. I don't see the tailight staying on, but
that is to expected, I

The tailight seems fine, but not sure how to judge that. When I look
behind while peddling (carefully) it seems very bright.

I'm guessing I did something wrong in hooking this up.Is there is a
simple fix that I am unaware of?

Thanks!

How fast are you going?
The Edelux is a bit over twice the brightness (according to my camera's
light meter) of the Ixon IQ. Sounds like all you have is the standlight
working. You should give me a call.

Hi Peter,

I just tried calling, and left WAY too long of a message, sorry!

I'm at work, and I don't have the bike with me. I'm in California, and
I'm sure by the time I get home ( 6:30 Pacific, 9:30 Eastern) you will
be long gone.

Should I bring my bike in tomorrow, so that I can call you and you can
direct me where to look? One thing to throw into the mix is the
standlight feature of the tailight is not working. Sorry, it was
months ago that I bought the light through Zack Kaplan, so I had
forgotten the specifics. My tailight is the seculite plus, so it
should have a standlight feature.

So please let me know if I should bring the bike in tomorrow.

Thank you very much!

Try reversing the wires connecting the headlight to the taillight. The
Seculite Plus can ground to the fender via its mounting bolt. And the
Edelux can ground to the frame via its base. So you may just have a short
between the two lights. Reverse the leads at the taillight and let us know
what happens.

Hey Peter,

I just reversed the wires at the tailight, spun the wheel, and I think
that did the trick. Hard to tell during daylight hours, but the light
output looks very good on the headlight, and the standlight is working
for both the headlight and tailight.

Your therory really made sense to me, since the Edelux had standlight
working, but no main light. The tailight had its main light going, but
no standlight. Reversing seems to work.

Big test will be going home from work tonight, but I think it will be
good. I'll let you know.

Oh, another question: Since my edelux is on the handlebar rack at the
height you reccomend, it is not interfering with my wireless Cateye
computer.
However, I have been putting my Ixon IQ on the handlebar, and no
matter how wide I put them, it knocks out the bike computer.   From
what I read on your site, it seems moving it down next to the Edelux
would be the best move, short of switching to a wired computer.
Please see enclosed pictures.

Thanks again,

Ty

Hi Peter,

All works well after reversing the connections on the taillight. I
confirmed it riding home. You are a genius! Headlight VERY bright, far
exceeding my expectations. I have some dark sections without
streetlights going home and it was amazing. Far better than my old
Dinotte 600 headlight, and I thought that was powerful. I really like
the focused beam as well. With the old Dinotte, I got cars coming at
me flashing their highbeams at me. I used to think they were just
being jerked. I didn't realize that I was shining the equivalent of
high beams at them. I can tell I will have no such issues with this
light.

Regarding the issue of where to put my Ixon IQ,, I can see that I
should get the handlebar adapter you sell along with the bracket, and
mount it on my front rack next to the Edelux. Do you agree?

Thanks again,

Ty

Final Update. All is well!

Peter diagnosed my problem very quickly. I had the wires reverersed! DOH!

In any case, I can't stress enough how fantastic this styem is . The
light from the Edelux just blows me away. I used to have Dinotte 600L
light, which at the time was their top of the line. This light really
lit up the dark, but I really annoyed oncoming drivers as it was the
eqivalent of a truck high beam. I didn't know I was being discourteous
about this until much later.

The light from the Edeulux actually lights up a dark path even better.
Much better flow of light. I see further, wider, and with more detail.
The focused beam clearly does not get in other driver's eyes. I am
very impressed!

The B&M Seculite plus taillight is great too. I particurly like the
fac that it is well visible from the side, an it also gives out a
great amount of light. I know there is a big debate between steady and
flashing taillight, and I am still torn on this issue. However, I
really can't see a driver coming from behind me being unable to see
it.

Next step is to get this set-up on my Bike Friday Tikit and my
cargo/shopping bike...

Anybody want to adopt me? ;)

The Edelux is indeed amazing.  Some years back, I built a headlight using a
rectifier bridge and two 3W LEDs wired in series, with appropriate lenses
and heatsinking.  I thought it was pretty good (and it *was*), but it paled
(pardon the pun) next to the Edelux.  Technology marches on!
