In speaking with a friend about an upcoming wheel build I was considering, he told me that Peter White does not build the wheels (has an employee)? Is this true? I don't know that it would matter but was curious. Doe anyone know for sure?
According to his website, he does some, but most are done by an employee;
however, he personally checks them all. I've had a number done and they
come as advertised- true and well tensioned.
If you are mechanically inclined, you could also buy components from him
and build your own. You'll spend more in equipment and time than you'll
save on labor (his prices are quite reasonable), but it is a load of fun.

I spend most of the day in front of a computer screen these days. And while after 40 years I've finally found the source of my back pain (wheat) I have enough damage after 40 years of inflammation that standing all day is difficult. It takes me a week to build up a bike in 1/2 hour sessions. So, from start to finish, I probably build only 5% of the wheels we sell. However, I thoroughly check every wheel before we ship it, and my mechanic builds wheels exactly the same way that I do, so I rarely have to make any further adjustments to the spokes. Before working for me, he had never built a bicycle wheel; I taught him. He had however built his own house (damned nice actually) and can rebuild an automobile engine with his eyes closed, so he has my full confidence.
Nevertheless, when Linda and I go on vacation, no wheels or bikes ship, simply because I'm not here to check them over, and nothing ships unless I know for myself that it's finished.
And as Mr. Quindazzi writes, wheel building is fun, and very satisfying when you're riding your own wheels. I've been doing that since 1970 or so. ;-)

I had built a few wheels using Sheldon Brown's instructions before I bought Mr. Musson's e-book. Their techniques are similar but the book has an additional level of detail that helped me. Obviously Jobst Brandt's book is also excellent and I've learned a lot from it, but it's more focused on the science than the construction.
Are there any other "reference" works that folks can recommend?
