A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Taiwan today,
seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was immediately issued.
The quake hit around 90 kilometres southeast of Taipei at 5.43am AEST
today, at a depth of 21 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.
Taiwan is regularly hit by earthquakes as the island lies near the
junction of two tectonic plates.
In September 1999, a 7.6-magnitude tremor killed around 2400 people in
the deadliest natural disaster in the island's recent history.
