QUEENSLAND Health has declared a new outbreak of dengue fever in
Cairns after residents tested positive for the mosquito-borne
disease.
The residents live in the suburbs of Manunda and Mooroobool and
authorities have warned locals in both areas to take precautions.
Queensland Health says it is unknown at this stage if the outbreak
is linked to current outbreaks at Innisfail, where 55 people have
been diagnosed with the virus.
It is the first outbreak of dengue to be confirmed in Cairns this
year and comes two years after the far north Queensland city
recorded its worst outbreak.
In 2009 more than 1000 people were diagnosed, including an elderly
woman who died.
Queensland Health Public Health Medical Officer Dr Steven Donohue
urged residents in affected suburbs to eliminate mosquito breeding
sites around homes.
"Dengue mosquitoes only breed around homes and in urban areas, and
not in swamps or creeks," he said. "With movement of people
between suburbs, dengue fever can easily spread across Cairns if
action isn't taken to manage mosquito numbers around the home."
