A SEVEN-month-old baby thrown from a multi-storey California parking garage earlier this week died today.

The infant, named Noe Medina Jr, was thrown from the fourth storey of a parking garage attached to the nearby Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) in Orange, California, on Monday night local time, The Orange County Register said.

Following the fall, the boy was taken to the UC Irvine Medical Centre in Orange - approximately 35 miles (56 km) south-east of Los Angeles - where he died.

The baby's mother, Sonia Hermosillo, 31, was arrested early yesterday after her car was spotted leaving the scene by surveillance cameras and her husband called emergency services to report that his wife and son were missing.

Ms Hermosillo is accused of driving the boy to the CHOC garage at approximately 6.20pm local time on Monday and throwing him over the edge.

She appeared in court today to face two felony counts of attempted murder and child abuse. The non-English speaking Ms Hermosillo was held on $1 million bail pending a formal arraignment on September 16.

The baby, according to the Register, had been diagnosed with congenital muscular torticollis, a condition in which the head is constantly tilted to one side. The baby also wore a helmet to combat flat head syndrome.

A spokeswoman for the district attorney's office said that Ms Hermosillo was accused of removing the baby's helmet before forcing him over the edge.

Ms Hermosillo's husband, Noe Medina, said that his wife had been in hospital in June after saying she no longer wanted her son.

"She didn't look at our son as normal," Mr Medina said yesterday. "She didn't accept him. She didn't accept that he was like this."

Mr Medina said his wife had been taking medication for postpartum depression and had attended her first therapy session that very morning.
