Strong Earthquake off Philippines: seismologists*

A moderate quake struck at sea off the main Philippine island of Luzon
on Thursday, seismologists said, but there were no immediate reports of
casualties or damage.
The US Geological Survey said the quake, with a magnitude of 5.4, hit at
10:02 am (0202 GMT) just two kilometres (1.2 miles) below the surface of
the Philippine Sea, and 146 kilometres southeast of Catanduanes island.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology put the magnitude
at 5.3.
The institute said it expected no damage but that aftershocks were
