Strong Earthquake Hits Northern Philippines
MANILA, Nov 6 (Bernama) -- A magnitude 5.8 earthquake hit parts of
Bicol region early Saturday morning, according to the Philippine
Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
China's Xinhua news agency reported that Phivolcs chief Renato Solidum
said over radio dzMM that the earthquake occurred at 0:41 a.m.
Saturday. It was followed by two aftershocks, magnitude 4.1 at 1:45
a.m. and magnitude 3.6 at 2:25 a.m.
Solidum and the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and
Management Council said that there were no reports of damage from the
tremors.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), however, recorded the earthquake at
magnitude 5.6 in an area near Masbate at a depth of 35.5 km.
Some citizens in Bicol said on twitter that they felt the strong quake.
"Generally felt by most people indoors and outdoors. Many people were
awakened from sleep. Some are frightened, some run outside in panic,"
local residents said.
Solidum said that the Sibuyan Sea Segment of the Philippine Fault Zone
has been moving since Thursday. He said more earthquakes generated by
the same fault may be felt on Saturday.
