Earthquake hits central Alaska
DENALI, Alaska — An earthquake has struck central Alaska, but there
are no reports of damage or injuries.
The Alaska Earthquake Information Center says the quake hit just
before 4 a.m. Saturday with a preliminary magnitude of 4.4.
The center says the earthquake was centered about 70 miles
west-southwest of Denali National Park, the home of the country's
tallest mountain in Mount McKinley. The quake occurred about 77
miles below ground.
Last month, a magnitude-7.2 earthquake shook a large swath of the
Aleutian Islands. The trembler on June 23 sent residents of small
coastal towns to higher ground as officials issued a tsunami
warning.
And on June 16, a 5.2 earthquake rocked Anchorage, Alaska's largest
city. The quake occurred 30 miles below ground and rumbled for
several seconds.
