THOUSANDS of homes in South Australia have been left without power
after electrical storms swept the state.
More than 68,000 lightning strikes were recorded across the state
in the 24 hours to 11pm (CDT) on Saturday, with strikes on power
lines and stations cutting electricity to about 25,000 people.
The Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) Utilities
estimated some 9000 customers remained without power Saturday
morning.
Homes in Whyalla, Port Pirie, Kadina, Nuriootpa and Clare, as well
as other parts of the state's mid-north, were affected.
ETSA Utilities spokesman Paul Roberts said the diverse locations
of the outages meant some customers faced a wait for reconnection.
"We have a significant number of single customer outages in
country areas and these will take time to restore, due to the
sheer number of outages," he said.
"In some cases, access to patrol and repair lines is a problem and
may further delay restoration."
