15 earthquakes hit northeastern, eastern Taiwan in 8 hours

Taipei, Oct. 30 (CNA) A series of 15 earthquakes, including two with magnitudes above 4.0, hit northeastern and eastern Taiwan over an eight-hour period starting late Friday but did not cause any casualties, the Central Weather Bureau reported Saturday.

The bureau advised local residents not to panic over the tremors because the series of small-scale earthquakes did not imply that a stronger earthquake was imminent.

But Kuo Kai-wen, director of the bureau's Seismology Center, said residents in hilly areas of Yilan County needed to exercise extra caution because the earthquakes may have left the region even more vulnerable to mudslides after the onslaught of heavy rainfall last week.

The series of earthquakes that hit between 10: 34 p.m. Friday and 6: 21 a.m. Saturday was centered in areas adjacent to Yilan's Nan-ao Township and Hualien County's Hsiulin Township in eastern Taiwan, Kuo said.

The epicenters of all of the quakes were close to each other, he added.

According to the Seismology Center's records, nine of the earthquakes in the series struck between 11 p.m. and midnight.

The strongest one, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake, hit at 11:27 p.m. at a depth of 21.6 kilometers and was entered 19.4 kilometers south of the Nan-ao seismic observation center.

The tremor reached an intensity of 5 at scenic Taroko Gorge in Hualien County, but lasted for only about 0.3 seconds, the Seismology Center said.

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake also jolted northeastern Taiwan at 11:30 p.m. in roughly the same location, according to the center.

With the Nan-ao-Hsiulin area located where the Eurasian and Philippine Sea tetonic plates converge, series of earthquakes often occur in the region, the center added.
